Island Video is closing

October 11th, 2010 by Dale

Island Video, 7216 Greenwood Avenue N., a long-time fixture in the neighborhood, is closing due to changing consumer habits.

“It’s because of Netflix, obviously,” lamented Chris, the store manager. “It’s a national disease.”

The store is expected to close in mid-December, Chris said. There is one other Island Video store in Madison Park.

We found out about this from Diane Butler, who posted a note on our Facebook page that read:

How can it be that our super cool Phinney Ridge neighborhood video store, Island Video, is closing?! I love movies, but I am not Netflix kind of gal. I like going into the shop, browsing the titles, and getting great advise from Chris about what to watch. He is a wealth of cinematographic history & knowledge. Let’s get our community organized to Save our Video Store!

Video: See Greenwood-Phinney Summer Streets

August 14th, 2010 by Dale

Here’s your chance to walk Friday night’s Seattle Summer Streets/Greenwood-Phinney Art Up Artwalk from the comfort of your chair.

In less than 3 minutes, you’ll see how people took over Greenwood Avenue for a few hours to do everything from high-speed skateboard slalom racing, to knitting, to blowing bubbles and seranading passers by with everything from Hip-Hop to Ravel’s Bolero.

And, of course, kids of all ages drawing with chalk on a canvas stretching from curb to curb.

Talent overflows at Greenwood Seafair Parade

July 28th, 2010 by Dale

Thousands turned out to watch a continuous stream of dancers, marching bands, classic cars, clowns, pirates and more at the 60th annual Greenwood Seafair Parade today.

Here’s a clip of some of the action. We’ll post more photos and video tomorrow.

Here’s the stunningly coordinated (in dress and movement) Seattle Chinese Community Girl’s Drill Team performing in front of the review stand.

And the Seattle Schools All-City Band, which combined a dance number with a strong musical performance was a real crowd-pleaser too.

What did you like best about the parade?

Video from the ArtWalk

May 16th, 2010 by Dale

Here are a couple clips we shot during the Greenwood-Phinney Artwalk.

First up, the Ukelele Ladies, who performed at Francine Seders Gallery, 6701 Greenwood Ave. N. on Friday night.

And as promised, here’s a clip of the guys performing outside of Makeda Coffee on Saturday. They’re looking for a name for their band. Got any ideas?

As we get more comfortable with the process of shooting, editing and posting video for the site, we’ll post more clips of happenings in the neighborhood.

We’re looking for video ideas, so let us know what goings on in the neighborhood you’d like to see us cover.
