Pig Out to end hunger in Phinney-Greenwood

September 24th, 2010 by Doree

Dozens of Phinney and Greenwood restaurants are once again donating a portion of their sales from one night to benefit the Phinney Neighborhood Association soup kitchens. The 8th annual “Phabulous Phinney Pig Out” is Thursday, Oct. 14.

In collaboration with St. John United Lutheran Church on Phinney Ridge and Crown Lutheran Church (in collaboration with Compass Housing Alliance) in Ballard, the PNA operates two soup kitchens. Three times a week, the soup kitchens serve more than 200 meals to low income, disabled and elderly neighborhood residents. Last year, the soup kitchens served a total of more than 23,000 meals. Grants from the City, volunteers and donated food take care of a large percentage of the cost of this program but not all of it.

To keep this program strong, 24 Phinney/Greenwood restaurants have agreed to donate a portion of their sales on Oct.14 to the soup kitchens. To make this effort successful, however, area residents are being urged to “Pig Out” all day long – breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and coffee after that. It’s as simple as that.

Participating restaurants include:

74th St. Ale House, 7401 Greenwood Ave. N.
Baranof, 8549 Greenwood Ave. N.

Phabulous Phinney Pig Out benefits soup kitchens

September 28th, 2009 by Doree

Thursday is the ever-popular 7th Annual Phabulous Phinney Pig Out (a PhinneyWood sponsor) to benefit the Phinney Center’s soup kitchens. You just eat at one of your favorite neighborhood restaurants, and they’ll give a portion of the proceeds to the PNA to keep feeding needy folks at their two soup kitchens in Phinney and Ballard.

In collaboration with St. John United Lutheran Church and Calvary Lutheran Church, the PNA operates two soup kitchens. Three times a week, the soup kitchens serve more than 150-200 meals to neighbors in need. Grants from the city, dedicated volunteers and donated food take care of a large percentage of the cost of this program but not all of it.

To keep this program strong, 20 neighborhood restaurants, pubs and coffee shops have agreed to donate a portion of their sales on Oct. 1 to the soup kitchens. To make this effort successful, area residents are being urged to have all their meals that day – breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and coffee at participating establishments. It’s that simple. The Pig Out event, which last year raised more than $3,000 for unrestricted support for the PNA soup kitchens, is the perfect excuse to spend the day at several of Phinney and Greenwood’s “phabulous” eateries. It is a great opportunity to be social with your friends and neighbors and not have to do the dishes afterwards.

Metropolis has donated balloons to mark all participating restaurants the day of the event. If you can’t eat out that day, you can always made a direct donation to the soup kitchen by sending a check to: PNA, 6532 Phinney Ave. N, 98103.

Participating restaurants this year include:
