Food & Drink now organized by category

September 6th, 2010 by Dale

Thanks to popular demand and our mad weak PHP coding skills, we’ve finally figured out how to organize the Food & Drink section into categories to make browsing easier.

See: All | Bars/pubs | Coffee shops | Delicatessens | Restaurants

We could use your help figuring out how to improve this further. We’ve had other suggestions, including highlighting places that are kid-friendly and have outdoor seating. What do you think? Do those categories work for you and are there any others you’d like to see? What would you consider “kid/family-friendly?” And would a place that has a few chairs outside qualify as having outdoor seating, or should we set a certain threshold?

Also, with the addition of a delicatessen category, we’ve added Ken’s Market and the Safeway deli to the section. And an oversight on our part has been corrected with the addition of Espresso Buono Cafe (located inside Couth Buzzard).

Let us know what you think!

Sundown Tavern changing name to “Sweet Lou’s”

June 10th, 2010 by Doree

The Sundown Tavern (also known as Sundown Saloon) at 820 NW 85th St. is changing its name to Sweet Lou’s. They’re having a grand opening to unveil their new name and new beer garden at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 26. They’ll have an outdoor pig roast and entertainment provided by several alternative country and rockabilly bands.

Formerly known as The Sundown Tavern, the former laundromat-turned-bar had been a Greenwood fixture for more than 60 years, at one time or another occupying three of the four corners of the intersection of 85th and Dibble. Jokingly referred to as “God’s Waiting Room” by its elderly regulars, the tavern had become somewhat rundown over the years, until its change in management a little over two years ago.

Since then, the management team of Lou Brauer and Carl Rogers have worked steadily to transform the venue into the kind of neighborhood bar for which they shared a love – safe, comfortable, welcoming, and above all else, fun. As part of that two-year transformation, a new bar and kitchen was constructed, and liquor, pull-tabs, and in-house smoked barbecue were added to the menu. Decorating the bar is a huge collection of assorted pictures of famous “Lous” throughout history, including Lou Gehrig, Lou Costello, and Lou Reed.

With more than 40 years of combined experience in the Seattle-area bar business, Brauer and Rogers first began crafting the idea of Sweet Lou’s six years ago at Mulleady’s Irish Pub in Magnolia, which Rogers owned and where Brauer served as general manager. On the 26th, the entrepreneurial pair will finally get to share their longtime vision – and their pulled pork – with the public.

Update on Tigertail closure

September 28th, 2009 by Dale

Update 5:45 p.m.: Just went by Tigertail again this afternoon and noticed a letter from the Department of Revenue in the window. The Sept. 17 letter states that Tigertail’s Certificate of Registration has been revoked because of three unpaid tax warrants in the amounts of $6,897.34, $10,397.76 and $12,970.20. The warrants were issued Aug. 28, 2008, Feb. 26, 2009, and June 25, 2009. The letter states that the sign must be posted conspicuously. We never noticed it the three previous times we stopped by in the last week, perhaps because the non-descript white paper is sandwiched in between the menu, reviews and various other signs. What’s interesting is that while the sign must be posted for the public to view, the Department of Revenue told us this morning it couldn’t comment on the case because it’s a privacy issue.

The state Liquor Control Board says this morning that the Washington State Department of Revenue is responsible for Tigertail’s closure.

The state DOR will only say that Tigertail, 704 NW 65th St., still has an active business license. They won’t comment on whether they are pursuing a matter against the company, saying it’s a privacy issue.

Still no word from Tigertail’s owners about what’s happening.

2 new west end additions to Food & Drink

August 25th, 2009 by Dale

We’ve had a couple requests to add Sundown Saloon and Four Spoons Cafe to the Food & Drink section and I’ve finally gotten around to posting them.

Four Spoons Cafe, 850 NW 85th St., opened in June and is serving breakfast and lunch, in the space formerly occupied by Crown Hill Bistro and the Library Cafe before that. They recently got a beer and wine license as well.

Just to the east, Sundown Saloon, 820 NW 85th St., changed ownership last fall, added a full bar this past spring and offers a full menu.

So, if you’ve been to Four Spoons or the Sundown just west of Greenwood in Crown Hill, click through to Food & Drink to post your reviews.

Pillager’s Pub to move into old Tully’s space

November 11th, 2008 by Doree

A liquor license application shows that Baron Brewing LLC plans to open Pillager’s Pub in the old Tully’s Coffee space at 87th & Greenwood. There wasn’t a sign in the window, but I did see this cool wooden club placed above the fireplace. It reads, “Pirates Only,” and there’s a kind of shrunken head on the end. There were two more shrunken heads sitting on top of the old coffee counter.

We’ve got a call in to Baron’s tap room in South Park for more information on when they hope to open in Greenwood.
