Enjoying the nice weather in Greenwood

May 29th, 2011 by Dale

The Yard Cafe, 8313 Greenwood Ave. N, is out of soft-launch mode and is officially open today. Patrons soaked up some drinks and filtered sun on their patio this afternoon.

Expect it to be more difficult to get a  seat on Monday, when the weather is expected to be dry and slightly warmer than today.

Blue Glass replacing Tiger Tail on 65th

September 22nd, 2010 by Doree

MyBallard reports that the Blue Glass applied for a liquor license in the former Tigertail location at 704 NW 65th, on the Lower Phinney/Ballard line. Their liquor license application is “to sell spirits, beer, and wine by the individual serving for on-premises consumption. In this case, 50 percent or more of the establishment is dedicated to dining.”

Tigertail closed last year. At the time, a letter from the Department of Revenue posted in the window said the bar owed back taxes.

Food & Drink now organized by category

September 6th, 2010 by Dale

Thanks to popular demand and our mad weak PHP coding skills, we’ve finally figured out how to organize the Food & Drink section into categories to make browsing easier.

See: All | Bars/pubs | Coffee shops | Delicatessens | Restaurants

We could use your help figuring out how to improve this further. We’ve had other suggestions, including highlighting places that are kid-friendly and have outdoor seating. What do you think? Do those categories work for you and are there any others you’d like to see? What would you consider “kid/family-friendly?” And would a place that has a few chairs outside qualify as having outdoor seating, or should we set a certain threshold?

Also, with the addition of a delicatessen category, we’ve added Ken’s Market and the Safeway deli to the section. And an oversight on our part has been corrected with the addition of Espresso Buono Cafe (located inside Couth Buzzard).

Let us know what you think!

Sundown Tavern changing name to “Sweet Lou’s”

June 10th, 2010 by Doree

The Sundown Tavern (also known as Sundown Saloon) at 820 NW 85th St. is changing its name to Sweet Lou’s. They’re having a grand opening to unveil their new name and new beer garden at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 26. They’ll have an outdoor pig roast and entertainment provided by several alternative country and rockabilly bands.

Formerly known as The Sundown Tavern, the former laundromat-turned-bar had been a Greenwood fixture for more than 60 years, at one time or another occupying three of the four corners of the intersection of 85th and Dibble. Jokingly referred to as “God’s Waiting Room” by its elderly regulars, the tavern had become somewhat rundown over the years, until its change in management a little over two years ago.

Since then, the management team of Lou Brauer and Carl Rogers have worked steadily to transform the venue into the kind of neighborhood bar for which they shared a love – safe, comfortable, welcoming, and above all else, fun. As part of that two-year transformation, a new bar and kitchen was constructed, and liquor, pull-tabs, and in-house smoked barbecue were added to the menu. Decorating the bar is a huge collection of assorted pictures of famous “Lous” throughout history, including Lou Gehrig, Lou Costello, and Lou Reed.

With more than 40 years of combined experience in the Seattle-area bar business, Brauer and Rogers first began crafting the idea of Sweet Lou’s six years ago at Mulleady’s Irish Pub in Magnolia, which Rogers owned and where Brauer served as general manager. On the 26th, the entrepreneurial pair will finally get to share their longtime vision – and their pulled pork – with the public.

Taquería Tequila wants to add bar

June 19th, 2009 by Dale

Taquería Tequila, 301 NW 85th St., hopes to add a bar in the space next door at 303 NW 85th St., which is now occupied by an accounting office, seen in the right edge of this file photo.

Here’s a link to the permit request.

The Greenwood discussion group (registration required) has a good thread going on this subject and Kimberly has added this great summary:

The drinking establishment is for the Taquería Tequila Authentic Mexican Food restaurant. I have talked with the contact person, Mario Vega. He is listed as the contractor. I have also talked with the city planner, Scott Ringgold. Both gentlemen were easy to talk to. The application the restaurant has submitted states that they want to convert 778 sq. ft. of office space into a 21 years old or older bar with eat in services. They plan on being open for business Monday - Thursday until 10 p.m. and Friday – Sunday until 1 or 1:30 a.m.

A public comment period is open until June 24. Contact Ringgold at (206) 233-3856 or scottringgold@seattle.gov
