Happy ending to stolen art story

May 16th, 2011 by Doree

Last week we told you about a thief who stole a small painting off the wall at Tasty art gallery, 7513 Greenwood Ave. N. The painting was one of three in a series.

Well, Tasty owner Sheri Hauser tells us that a PhinneyWood reader who saw the story attended the Friday night Greenwood-Phinney Artwalk and bought the remaining two paintings by artist Joel Scholten, and commissioned Scholten to create a new painting to take the place of the stolen art.

Peter purchased the two yellow bird paintings in the background that were created by artist Joel Scholten.

Below is the stolen painting, titled “Heartless.” It is still missing.

Artwalk plus Arts Crush Friday night

October 7th, 2010 by Doree

This month’s Art Up Artwalk on Friday evening will be a little bigger than usual, as several local venues are participating in a month-long, Puget Sound region-wide arts festival called Arts Crush (see yesterday’s post for more on Arts Crush participants and dates).

Thirty-six Phinney-Greenwood businesses are participating in the Artwalk from 6-9 p.m. (a few are celebrating until 10 p.m.) Here is a small sample of participants. For the complete list, see the Art Up website with artist descriptions and a map.

Oliver’s Twist, 6822 Greenwood Ave. N., features acrylic and graphite on wood art by Cheryl Robinson (below).

Avanti Art & Design, 7317 Greenwood Ave. N., features photography by Doug Rosenoff, Shelly Cohen and Dewain Gauntett, multi-media by Wendy Keen, printmaking & multi-media by Emmalee Bozek, illuminated sculpture by Leo Schmidt, and glass and painting by Nancy Fiala.

Assemble Gallery & Studio, 7406 Greenwood Ave. N., is hosting artist Elizabeth Soule’s exhibition, “The Little Zoo,” of Polaroid images shot with an SX-70 camera, which shows toy animals in staged environments (below).

The Chocolate Shoe Box, 7410 Greenwood Ave. N., has mixed-media patterned and nature-oriented pieces by vegan painter Angela Scott.

Couth Buzzard Books, 8310 Greenwood Ave. N., features paintings, photography and sculpture by Stacy Schonhardt, Roger Willsie, TV-TommyVision, Kelly Davis, Sylvia Stout, Joseph Sturm and Ann Burglund.

In The Red Wine Bar & Café, 6510 Phinney Ave. N., has “stark, tortured, primal color portraitures” by Emily Cadwell (below).

Gainsbourg, 8550 Greenwood Ave. N., features Portland photographer Lloyd Kimeldorf.

Drawn to the Surrealist movement at an early age, Kimeldorf developed a visual curiosity which still influences his way of seeing. While taking classes in film making, he became intrigued with his current medium, still photography. He creates and captures singular frames, each describing a fully formed moment within a story … explicit, but leaving the rest up to the viewer to decide. His body of work consists of three collections: portraits, nudes, and concept pieces. Sometimes surreal, or comical, and often dramatic, Lloyd’s work is inspired by a cast of ground-breaking photographers, such as Man Ray and Helmut Newton.

Makeda Coffee, 153 N. 78th St., has photography by Keith Slawson and live Brazilian music by Choro Loco.

Rockwell Realty, 8315 Greenwood Ave. N., has “large-scale atmospheric oil paintings inspired by travel” by Jeremy Kronbach (below).

Phinney Neighborhood Association, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., is showcasing juror’s picks from The Northwest Fine Arts Competition, an annual competition find innovative and talented local emerging artists working in all media. Nice night for an Artwalk

September 11th, 2010 by Doree

Friday was a nice night for the monthly Greenwood-Phinney Artwalk (until that brief rain shower about 8:15 that soaked us as we were walking home). Here are some highlights, but since we only made it to a few places, if you’ve got nice photos of other artists and their work, please email them to us and we’ll post them.

At Yvonne Palermo Gallery inside the Greenwood Collective at 8537 Greenwood Ave. N. Suite 1, artist Nick Beery had an interesting take on one of our favorite Muppets.

Inside Urban Light Studios at the Greenwood Collective, Breanne Boland drew “historical pickles” for $1 (one man asked her to sketch Marie Antoinette as a pickle).

And Sean Michael Robinson quickly sketched anyone who asked. (He and Boland were part of The Bureau of Drawers, a collection of cartoonists and illustrators, who were also selling mini comics.)

At GC’s Bherd Studios, artist Troy Gua combined two faces to create a unique picture: such as David Bowie and Michaelangelo’s David; Jim Morrison and Jesus; and the Mona Lisa and Lady Gaga.

At Art on the Ridge at 8005 Greenwood Ave. N., these kids couldn’t keep away from the marble and metal sculpture.

And it was opening night for The Olive and Grape at 8516 Greenwood Ave. N., which had a good crowd of diners during the Artwalk. Breadmaker Reykhan Khasanova brought her dough-making skills out into the restaurant for diners to watch.

September Artwalk Friday night offers plenty of art and other specials

September 9th, 2010 by Doree

The monthly Greenwood-Phinney Art Up Artwalk is from 6-9 p.m. Friday night with plenty of artist openings at local galleries and specials at businesses (some of the galleries and businesses are open past 9 p.m.) Here are a few highlights, but you can check out the full list of participating businesses and artists here.

Palermo Art Gallery, which held its grand opening inside the Greenwood Collective at 8537 Greenwood Ave. N. last month, has its first group show, with gallery owner Yvonne Palermo and featured guest artist Nick Beery.

Yvonne Palermo’s paintings promote social awareness of chronic pain as a legitimate health condition through emotionally charged portrayals of haggard female figures paired with twisted spinal imagery and layers of abstract strokes of paint. Palermo works in a series layers incorporating her training in surface design, medical diagrams and words to create patchwork-quilt-like paintings that parallel her experiences on the operating table and in American medical environment. Her innovative paintings convey the horrors of our current healthcare system from the perspective of a woman who is well acquainted with the negative attitude towards chronic physical pain in American hospitals.

Black & Blue by Nick Beery.

Nick Beery’s work has been described as edgy-pop-surrealism. The body of work included is a mash up of various styles and media that has earned the handle ‘pop-fiction’. Screen-printed zombie rappers bring a darkly decayed appeal to hip-hop related art. Oil paintings of melting landscapes with metal/steam-punk infused animals and creatures vibrantly stand out amongst smaller pieces of original artwork. Twisted muppets and sexy female illustrations are also featured as part of the ‘tri-fect’ ménage of mayhem which are exceedingly familiar cult parodies and odes to the bad-ass, chic women who bleed mythologies of today.

Assemble Gallery & Studio at 7406 Greenwood Ave. N. features avant-garde quilter Boo Davis, who is releasing her first book, “Dare to be Square.” (See today’s Seattle Times’ article about Davis.)

Davis reinterprets traditional quilt patterns with bold pictorial representations, limiting her designs to simple-to-sew squares and rectangles. A deviation from her heavy metal-inspired quilts under the studio name Quiltsrÿche, Dare to Be Square features images of owls, robots and wiener dogs. The show runs through October 6, 2010.

Tasty art gallery at 7513 Greenwood Ave. N. opens its surrealist “Dreams & Visions” on Friday.

Tasty is thrilled to be showing new works by artists Don DeLeva and Dara Harvey.

Don works in an intuitive style using “free flowing ideas that crystallize over time into image”. He starts by painting a texture into the primer and adds lines or shapes that he’s visualized in his head. Reading between the abstract lines, he brings out imagery using elements of traditional painting.

In her own words, Dara’s art is “largely a process of inspired scribbling, deliberate interpretations of bizarre mark making and intuition of form to create deconstructed characters that are then stitched back together, often in ambiguous or fanciful environments.”

At Balderdash Books & Art at 8536 Greenwood Ave. N., see the urban contemporary artwork of John Lodholz (below).

Bherd Studios, inside the Greenwood Collective, 8537 Greenwood Ave. N., presents “You’re So Vain (you probably think this art is about you),” featuring 10 different artists’ interpretations of portraiture in the modern art world: Daniel Carrillo, Jonathan Collis, Chris Crites, Troy Gua, Lucien Knuteson, Wyatt Landis, Mary McIntyre, John Osgood, Brian Thies, Joey Veltkamp, Redd Walitzki, Daniel John Williams.

(Fashion Monster Chanel by Redd Walitzki.)

A number of restaurants, bars and other businesses run specials during the Artwalk, including Carmelita, Bleacher’s Pub, Emma Jean’s Consignments, and Gaspare Ristorante and Bar. See the artwalk website for the full list.

The Olive and Grape – a new Mediterranean restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Olive You at 8516 Greenwood Ave. N. – officially opens its doors at 4 p.m. Friday with olive oil tastings and other specials. Check out the wall murals by local artist Chrystine Westphal.

August 13th, 2010 by Doree

Friday night’s annual Seattle Summer Streets, combined with the monthly Art Up Artwalk, brought thousands of people to the neighborhood for a stroll down Greenwood Avenue, which was closed to cars for 22 blocks.

Where are the pedals on that bike?

The Green Bean Coffeehouse officially reopened last month, but they held their grand opening celebration Friday night.

Hejira performed in front of Art on the Ridge.

Children got to play on the kids obstacle course.

Artist Yvonne Palermo just opened her new studio inside the Greenwood Collective. Her art expresses her struggle with chronic pain and the healthcare system.

As always, the Bubbleman was a huge hit.

And he blew the BIGGEST. BUBBLE. EVER.

Summer Streets & Artwalk to close down Greenwood Avenue Friday night

August 10th, 2010 by Doree

This month’s Art Up Artwalk features a record 38 participating businesses, in conjunction with the annual Seattle Summer Streets program. Greenwood Avenue will be closed to vehicles from North 65th Street to North 87th Street from 6-9 p.m. Friday (65th, 80th and 85th streets will remain open to traffic).

Businesses are sponsoring a variety of fun things for everyone of all ages to do, from the always popular Bubbleman to dancing in the streets.

(Photo of last year’s Summer Streets by Brian Hart.)

The idea behind Summer Streets is for pedestrians and cyclists to better connect with one another and shop at their neighborhood businesses. Last year’s inaugural Summer Streets in Greenwood-Phinney drew plenty of people who drew with chalk in the middle of the street, held a guerrilla knitting party, played a wiffleball game and browsed neighborhood shops. Summer Streets is sponsored by the City of Seattle’s Department of Transportation and the Greenwood-Phinney Chamber of Commerce.

(Novice and experienced knitters created a “river of yarn” at last year’s Summer Streets.)

Here’s a selection of fun happenings scheduled:

Metropolis & Rising Stars at 7321 Greenwood Ave. N. are hosting the Bubbleman from 6-7 p.m. and again from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Kids can get their face painted inside of Rising Stars from 6-8 p.m. And Greenwood resident Mayor Mike McGinn will be in front of the building at 7 p.m. to hand out prizes to those who participated in July’s Walk Bike Ride Challenge.

(The Bubbleman draws a crowd at last year’s event.)

The American Dance Institute at 8001 Greenwood Ave. N. is hosting Ballroom, Flamenco and Hip Hop Dance Classes in the street.

Tasty art gallery at 7513 Greenwood Ave. N. is hosting an outdoor tea party and live art.

The Defenders of Greenwood will let children (and excited parents) sit in their fire engine and learn more about fire safety at the temporary Fire Station 21 at 6801 Greenwood Ave. N.

There’ll be live music by The Shed Boys in front of the Phinney Neighborhood Center at 6532 Phinney Ave. N.

A group of folks are putting together a wiffle ball game at North 73rd Street and Greenwood Avenue North.

Sustainable Greenwood Phinney is hosting a ‘60s “Dancing in the Streets” party in front of Santoro’s Books at 7405 Greenwood Ave. N.

Naked City Brewery & Taphouse at 8564 Greenwood Ave. N. and Bleacher’s Pub at 8118 Greenwood Ave. N. are sponsoring a pub crawl.

Also, Maryhill Rats is sponsoring a skateboard slalom, and Seattle Children’s Hospital will have a kids’ obstacle course.

Friday is also the kick-off for the 5th annual Gumshoe 5K Walk, a fundraiser for the Greenwood Senior Center. Purchase an entry form for $20, then follow the clues on a three-mile walk around the neighborhood, discovering quirky garden art and interesting houses and businesses. Turn in your completed entry form and be eligible for a drawing for gift cards from Fred Meyer. (Stay tuned for a more detailed Gumshoe post in the next day or two.)

And stay tuned for a separate post on the Artwalk, with a list of participating businesses, artists, etc.
