Metro Spokeswoman Linka Thielke tells us the ladder apparently flew off the truck when it changed lanes as it passed the bus on the left. Thielke said the bus driver was shaken up but not injured. Passengers caught the following bus.
Shelly Rae Clift, who took the above photo, said the ladder came from a Comcast truck.
Taproot Theatre actor Mark Chamberlin, a Phinney Ridge resident who just finished a run as the lead Odysseus in “The Odyssey,” died after a weekend bicycle accident, The Seattle Times reports.
This was posted on the Taproot Facebook page:
We’re sorry to share this news with our Taproot Theatre patrons and friends. Mark just finished a masterful run as Odysseus in our season opener The Odyssey. Our prayers go out to his family and friends.
Chamberlin was also slated to perform April 4 on the opening night of ACT Theatre’s Pinter Fortnightly series.
A man on a bicycle and a car collided near West Woodland Elementary School just before 5 p.m. The accident at 3rd Ave. and 54th St. briefly trapped the bicyclist’s legs under the vehicle, Seattle Fire tells us. But other than abrasions, the man in his 40s sustained “no significant injuries.” He was transported to Harborview Medical Center. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
No word on the cause of the accident, which was cleared at 5:45 p.m.
That helicopter over east Phinney and west Green Lake at 5:30 p.m. was a news chopper capturing the scene of a rollover accident on Woodland Place, just south of North 65th Street.
The car came off southbound Aurora Avenue and flipped three times after hitting the embankment, said Otis Hopkins, who was standing at a nearby bus stop when the accident happened.
“I heard this screech and I saw this car coming off the embankment,” he said. The car rolled, then hit a tree. ”It went head over heels.”
Hopkins rushed over to see the passenger hanging upside-down and having a seizure. He and the driver got the man out. The passenger was biting down on his tongue, so Hopkins pushed down on the man’s chin, opening his airway. The man made a sharp inhalation and soon regained consciousness.
Paramedics arrived a short time later and traffic was rerouted around the scene. Both men were taken to area hospitals. The car can be seen in the background, along with Hopkins, who is holding his bike.
Based on tire tracks in the grass and the demolished Blue Star Memorial Highway sign (which had recently been restored), it appears the car came off southbound Aurora Avenue.
Officers at the scene would not speculate on the cause of the accident.
Mike Veitenhans sent us photos of the damage done by a car that slammed into the guardrail in front of Starbucks Wednesday night.
(A) car heading north on Phinney failed to negotiate the dogleg turn to Greenwood at 67th. Car skidded into the guardrail and damaged the guardrail, tables and chairs. According to a Starbucks customer and neighbor who witnessed the accident, the driver was cited by police.
Update: Traffic is now moving northbound on Aurora Avenue North after this afternoon’s accident.
Earlier: All lanes of northbound Aurora Avenue are blocked from North 59th St past North 67th Street, because of a car vs. pedestrian accident.
According to the Seattle Fire Department’s Real Time 911 Log, Engine 21, Engine 16 and Medic 18 were dispatched. The accident happened about 12:16 p.m.
Update 1:40 p.m.: Here’s the latest from the Seattle Police Department Blotter:
Vehicle/Pedestrian collision with injuries
On September 22nd at approximately 12:15 p.m. officers responded to a 911 call of a vehicle/pedestrian collision in the 6700 block of northbound Aurora Avenue North. An adult male pedestrian was crossing Aurora Avenue North from west to east and was struck by a northbound van in the inside lane. He was subsequently struck a second time by another northbound truck in the center lane.
The pedestrian was transported by SFD medics to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Neither one of the involved drivers were injured.
Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are on scene actively investigating.
All three northbound lanes of Aurora Avenue North are completely shut down at the 5900 block with traffic being diverted eastbound onto Greenlake Way. We estimate this closure will last several hours.
Christina wants to know if anyone has seen a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run in Greenwood/Crown Hill early this morning.
At 1am August 17, there was a hit and run on 10th Ave NW between 80th and 85th. As the driver fled the scene, they headed north on 10th to 85th where they turned and headed east. They were driving a red truck with a silver tool box in the back. There would be new body damage to the front driver side of the truck. If anyone has any additional information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of our neighbors who acted so quickly last night.
A two-car collision on 8th Avenue Northwest at NW 75th Street at about 5:30 a.m. temporarily blocked traffic while police investigated. An initial report that three cars were involved was incorrect.
According to police and one person involved in the accident, a Geo Metro ran the stop sign on NW 75th Street and got T-boned by a Ford F150 pickup truck heading south on 8th Avenue NW. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, police said.
“I was just going down the street. The lady never stopped. She never even slowed down,” said the visibly shaken pickup driver. “I’m alright. It just scared me, with her,” he said, fearing she had been more seriously injured.
The dark green Geo Metro ended up on the east side of 8th facing the opposite direction.
Don, who lives nearby, said he heard a “screech and a whoomp” at about 5:30 a.m. and ran outside with his camera. You can find a link to his picture in comments. “The woman was still in the car and talking, but it sounded like she was in pain. As I was leaving two police cars and a fire engine were on the scene.”
If you also heard a news helicopter at about that time, that’s why it was over the area.
Our favorite scanner-hound, Silver, tells us that police are tracking a suspect from a possible hit-and-run accident at N. 87th Street and Greenwood Ave. N 90th Street and Meridian Avenue. That accident happened about 1:08 a.m.
Silver is posting scanner updates on the situation in the forum.
Update: Media reports say a man crashed a car into a house, then ran off. During a chase, the man allegedly assaulted a police officer and tried to take her gun away.
Those helicopters you heard overhead earlier this evening were news choppers covering the story of a woman whose car went into a ravine near Carkeek Park just after 6 p.m. It happened at Third Avenue Northwest and NW 115th Street. KING 5 reported the woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.
Update: Seattle City Light reports that power to the area has been fully restored.
Earlier: Seattle Police are at the scene of a traffic accident near 3rd Ave. NW and NW 55th St. in Lower Phinney/East Ballard. Crime scene tape is up and the intersection is blocked.
Seattle Police Department Spokeswoman Renee Witt says police are waiting for Traffic Collision Investigators, who are called to the scene when there’s major damage or serious injuries.
Here’s what neighbor Milissa says happened:
From what I could tell the truck was attached to a trailer hitch up the hill about 100 feet and when they unhitched the trailer, the truck rolled down the hill and hit the pole. When the pole fell it ripped a bunch of lines out of the house across the street.
Thanks to Dave for the tip, and artman 1951 for the photo.
