2-car accident at 8th Ave NW and NW 75th

March 3rd, 2010 by Dale

A two-car collision on 8th Avenue Northwest at NW 75th Street at about 5:30 a.m. temporarily blocked traffic while police investigated. An initial report that three cars were involved was incorrect.

According to police and one person involved in the accident, a Geo Metro ran the stop sign on NW 75th Street and got T-boned by a Ford F150 pickup truck heading south on 8th Avenue NW. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, police said.

“I was just going down the street. The lady never stopped. She never even slowed down,” said the visibly shaken pickup driver. “I’m alright. It just scared me, with her,” he said, fearing she had been more seriously injured.

The dark green Geo Metro ended up on the east side of 8th facing the opposite direction.

Don, who lives nearby, said he heard a “screech and a whoomp” at about 5:30 a.m. and ran outside with his camera. You can find a link to his picture in comments. “The woman was still in the car and talking, but it sounded like she was in pain. As I was leaving two police cars and a fire engine were on the scene.”

If you also heard a news helicopter at about that time, that’s why it was over the area.

Police, K-9 tracking suspect in Greenwood

February 10th, 2010 by Doree

Our favorite scanner-hound, Silver, tells us that police are tracking a suspect from a possible hit-and-run accident at N. 87th Street and Greenwood Ave. N 90th Street and Meridian Avenue. That accident happened about 1:08 a.m.

Silver is posting scanner updates on the situation in the forum.

Update: Media reports say a man crashed a car into a house, then ran off. During a chase, the man allegedly assaulted a police officer and tried to take her gun away.

Here are some news reports from The Seattle Times (our news partner), KING 5, KOMO and KIRO.

And here’s video from the scene:

Traffic accident at 3rd Ave. NW & NW 55th St.

January 27th, 2010 by Doree

Update: Seattle City Light reports that power to the area has been fully restored.

Earlier: Seattle Police are at the scene of a traffic accident near 3rd Ave. NW and NW 55th St. in Lower Phinney/East Ballard. Crime scene tape is up and the intersection is blocked.

Seattle Police Department Spokeswoman Renee Witt says police are waiting for Traffic Collision Investigators, who are called to the scene when there’s major damage or serious injuries.

Here’s what neighbor Milissa says happened:

From what I could tell the truck was attached to a trailer hitch up the hill about 100 feet and when they unhitched the trailer, the truck rolled down the hill and hit the pole. When the pole fell it ripped a bunch of lines out of the house across the street.

Thanks to Dave for the tip, and artman 1951 for the photo.

Roundup of this and that

December 17th, 2009 by Doree

Here are a few things from the neighborhood you might want to know about:

Music Center of the Northwest’s “Messiah Sing/Play Along” last Sunday night raised 240 pounds of food and $632 for FamilyWorks Food Bank.

Seattle Parks and Recreation is hosting another public meeting to plan and design the new 9th Avenue NW Park. The meeting is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday (tonight), at Whittier Elementary School, 1320 NW 75th St. The 39,000 square foot property was purchased with funding from the 2000 Pro Parks Levy and is being developed with $800,000 from the Parks & Green Spaces Levy.

Woodland Park Zoo is offering one free child’s admission with a paying adult if you mention the offer “Winter Fun” at the entry gate during schools’ Winter Break. The offer runs Dec. 19 through Jan. 3.

Someone witnessed a hit-and-run accident last Friday, and wants to know if the victim needs a witness.

My husband witnessed a hit and run at the intersection of 3rd NW and 65th Friday around 6:50pm. He didn’t stop for the victim because he saw an opportunity to follow the perpetrator. Unfortunately he was unable to keep up with the guy. We did call the Seattle PD N Precinct to report what he saw, but also wanted to send his contact info to PhinneyWood in case you hear of someone looking for a witness to the accident. The victim car was a black Prius and the perpetrator was a light blue Honda.

If you need to speak to this witness, please email us and we’ll put you in touch.

Time is almost up for the Greenwood-Phinney Historical Society’s contest to find the oldest house in our neighborhood.

We do have houses built before 1906. Perhaps we still have a few houses that were built before 1900? Hint: if you find a construction date of 1900 in King County Tax Records keep digging! The house might actually be older than that. Building permits will give you a more accurate construction date.

Houses must be within the Phinney-Greenwood neighborhood (50th to 105th Streets, Aurora to 8th Avenue NW) but contest entrants need not live within the neighborhood. The house does not need to be yours! You can enter any house in the neighborhood that you feel might be the oldest! More than one entry per person is acceptable. Please include your name and contact information so that we may contact you if you are the winner!

When you’ve found your “contestant” take a photograph of it and photocopy your documents identifying the construction date of the house. Winning entry will be determined by oldest construction or building permit date of all entries received. Entries must be received by January 15, 2010. Send your photo(s) and documents to: GPHS Oldest House Contest, c/o Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103.

Winner receives a copy of “Seattle’s Greenwood-Phinney Neighborhood” signed by author Ted Pedersen and breakfast for two at Mae’s Phinney Ridge Café.

Beer truck crunches sedan on 85th this afternoon

December 14th, 2009 by Doree

A Budweiser beer truck hit a sedan head-on near N. 85th St. & Linden Ave. N. around 2:30 Monday afternoon. Susan sent us these pictures of the accident, and an account of what happened.

The driver of the truck, who gave his name as Tim, said he was driving up the hill in the west-bound lane when the sedan crossed over the line into his lane. “He came right at me! ” said the driver, “I thought maybe he wanted to commit suicide.”

When the vehicles collided, the sedan driver’s head smashed into the windshield. The truck driver said the other driver’s air-bags didn’t deploy because his car slid under the cab.

According to the trucker, who was unhurt and not at fault, the other driver survived the crash. He was conscious, although bleeding from the head, and was taken to the hospital by an ambulance.

While we were standing at the corner of 85th & Linden, several fire trucks and police cars screamed past us toward Greenwood. The officer at the corner said two other accidents had just occurred - a rolled-over car, and another semi-truck/sedan head-on collision. Officers directed traffic off N. 85th onto side streets.

And David Liberty sent this picture of the scene too:

Thanks Susan and David!

Witness to Oct. 26 accident needed

November 16th, 2009 by Doree

Lotta is hoping that someone saw the accident on Oct. 26 that injured her service dog.

On October 26, around 8 PM, my service dog Oliver got hit by a car on the corner of NW 77th St and 3rd Ave NW. It was by a miracle that Oliver even survived and is currently recovering.

I was sitting in the middle of the road with Oliver in my arms, when the driver came back, repeatedly saying that they didn’t see him. Then they just left. I was in complete shock, didn’t think of asking for their contact information or anything else.

Due to that Oliver is a service animal, he is covered under insurance, but I need the information of the actual people who drove the car and get their statement.

If anyone has any information, please email Lotta.

Car snaps off fire hydrant

October 5th, 2009 by Dale

A car hit a fire hydrant at 83rd and Greenwood, sending water through the neighborhood last night, bringing back reminders of the downtown Greenwood water main break in August. Anna tells us she saw water running down the street as far away as 79th and Dayton at about 10:30 p.m.

Stacy provided this account of the incident:

A car knocked over a fire hydrant on the corner of 83rd and Greenwood. It then ran into the corner of the building there. I am not sure, but I think the occupants of the car had only minor injuries. Right now the police are there trying to turn the water off, and have part of that intersection blocked off.
Water is running down that street and along Dayton. It’s pretty deep in the street - you wouldn’t want to bicycle through it. It’s very deep at 80th and Dayton - please be careful driving.

According to Seattle Public Utilities, the impact snapped off the hydrant underground. They’ll dig it up and repair it within a week. It could even be done in the next day or so if there isn’t another working hydrant within 300 feet.

Update 10/7: Artman1951 sent us some photos of the scene the following day and we’re just getting around to posting them. Thanks, Artman!

Here’s the scene:

Here’s the remains of the hydrant.

Here’s the wall the car struck.

Motorcycle vs. car accident on 3rd Avenue

September 15th, 2009 by Dale

Update 7:10 p.m.: 3rd Avenue NW at NW 70th Street has reopened after an injury accident involving a motorcycle and a car.

According to witness Siera Wilson, the motorcyclist was heading northbound on 3rd when his bike clipped a westbound car sticking out into the intersection at NW 70th Street. The motorcyclist ended up going to the hospital, with what appeared to be a back injury.

The car driver, who was not injured, could be seen picking a piece of her car out of the intersection:

Wilson was walking by with her dog as the accident happened. She said the motorcycle driver tried to avoid the car, but didn’t quite make it, clipping the front of the car. “He let go of his motorcycle and went flying about eight feet,” she said.

Third Avenue was closed briefly but is now open in both directions.

Motorcycle & car collide at Greenwood & 102nd

June 29th, 2009 by Doree

Update Wednesday, 9 p.m.: Commenting on this story has been turned off due to some people disregarding the rules against offensive language and threats.

George emailed to tell us of a terrible accident at Greenwood & 102nd just before 9 tonight:

The motorcycle was traveling north at “in excess of 90mph” (said passengers in cars who witnessed it). His passenger flew through the air all the way to 103rd. The man lost his leg in the hood of the car.

We live on the corner, heard the crunch, and saw the motorcycle passenger flying through the air. The motorcycle was traveling north on Greenwood. The car was driving south, turning left onto 102nd. The police are still here (at 10:20 p.m.) doing a full forensics on the scene. Both motorcycle passengers were alive but unconscious when they went into the ambulances.

Seattle Fire Department’s Real Time 911 log shows a massive aid response at 8:47 p.m.

There’s not a lot of information yet, but KOMO is reporting that both motorcycle riders sustained life threatening injuries. Thanks, George, for the tip and photo.
