We used Element Hardwood Floors. Kevin was terrific. He did an awesome job, on time, and was just a really nice guy to deal with. We had both oak and fir floors refinished, including some that had been painted. He had to work by hand around our staircase railing and didn't seem to think that was any sort of problem (another bidder proposed removing the whole railing!)

We bought sash replacements by Marvin Window. These replace the moving parts of the window and you install them in your old frames. They come with some hardware that you put in first on the sides of the old frame. I read the directions and they sound very easy to install, but we paid a professional to do it. He did a great job. I'd recommend him (Walter's Windows) but a couple years ago when I was thinking of having some other work done his contact info didn't work anymore and I could not find him. I think any carpenter could handle the job. In an old house there might be some leveling/squaring issues.

The product we bought was wood on the inside and metal-clad on the outside. There were around 5 colors available for the outside. We bought them at that window place that used to be at 86th and Linden, but they are not there anymore. Dunn Lumber carries them (special order, as you might expect).

In my opinion vinyl would ruin the character of a 100 year old house. There are some products that look nicer than others, but at the higher price points you might as well get wood.

A friend of mine replaced the windows in her house and used Lindal. She said that they are quality, but less expensive than other all-wood windows. I have not verified her statement, but it's something to consider.

Wood windows are more attractive (in my opinion), but can require more maintenance. Whether vinyl would ruin the character of your house would depend on how much character your house has. The character of my 100 year-old house wasn't ruined with vinyl windows, but it wasn't a house with high character in the first place!

I love the look of my double-hung wood windows in my 100 year-old house, but the heating bills (and cold sitting next to them!) are getting ridiculous. Any advice? Would vinyl ruin the character? How about a company to go with. I pretty much need to do the whole house (about 18 windows)!

My family and I live on NW 78th just off the ridge. It has been a brutal year for appliance failure in our home: furnace, range and dishwasher. The fridge started warming the other day, my nightmare was that it was finished as well. We called a few appliance repair shops, quickly noticing that a few of then sold appliances as well, that scared us! Enter Mike at Green Machine Appliance Repair, top notch guy and owner of this company. He came over, $198 part plus labor, done, fixed, much to my relief:

I had a roof done by Jorve, they did a good job, right on bid, the contract covered incidental problems and rot repair (no extra $ and there were some) - about 5 years later I had a tree fall on my house, jorve came out checked out the damage, repaired the damaged part ($100.00) then checked and repaired misc problems on roof at no charge - they were not the least or most expensive, but they did the job, ahead of schedule and on budget with no problems.

I recently got estimates from 2 different companies. One bid was for about 10k and the other for 20k. The 20k guy showed me that my roof had 3 layers of asphalt shingles with no underlay or sheathing, rot in the frames of 3 skylights, etc. The first bidder didn't mention any of these problems so I am suspicious that all of these problems would be "discovered" as the work was done and I would have to pay extra charges. Don't know what to think.

Can anyone recommend an honest roofer that will do a great job at a reasonable price? Thanks!

We have been on Comcast Business Class since the end of 2009. After working with their techs for awhile to straighten out some noise problems in the neighborhood that were severely messing up the upstream bandwidth, it's been flawless for the most part. (No high speed connection will ever be 100% perfect all the time)

We were with QWest before that, for 5 years. Looking at the CLink web site and checking to see what bandwidth they can provide to my place, they STILL can do no better than 3MB download and around 1MB upload. For less $ we get 12MB download and 5MB upload from Comcast.
