Hundreds of streets throughout the city will be blocked off tonight as Seattle takes part in the national Night Out Against Crime. The idea is to get neighbors together to get to know each other better and party in the street. The Seattle Police Department encourages block parties as a crime prevention tool.
From 6-9 p.m., kids will be riding bicycles, blowing bubbles and creating chalk art. Adults will be grilling and sharing tips on home improvement and gardening.
If you’re driving, please be aware that it may take some detours for you to get home, and you may not be able to park right in front of your house if your block is closed to cars for those three hours. Block party hosts are not allowed to block the street with something large like a car; instead they should use garbage and recycling carts that can be easily moved if emergency vehicles need to get through.
