Alzheimer Cafe debuts Tuesday

August 4th, 2011 · 9 Comments

The Greenwood Senior Center has created an “Alzheimer’s Café,” the second of its kind in the country. It debuts next Tuesday at Mae’s Phinney Ridge Café, 6412 Phinney Ave. N.

Modeled after a movement in Europe of social gatherings for people with Alzheimer’s and their care partners, the Alzheimer Cafe provides an opportunity to get out and socialize in a safe environment. “Safe in the way that people can be themselves with no judgment and no expectations,” said Jytte Lokvig, who has created the first café in the US in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Our neighborhood café will have its first gathering on Tuesday, August 9 from 3:30 – 5 pm and Mae’s fabulous ice cream will make this first gathering an ice cream social. Free program cost is your café order only.

To learn more about the Alzheimer Café call Greenwood Senior Center social worker Carin Mack, MSW, at 206.297.0875 or 206.230.0166.

Love it! Our mom has Alzheimers and she still gets to go lots of places and do lots of stuff. Even if she doesn’t remember it afterward, she stays pretty darn cheerful. And what a wonderful thing this is for the caregivers – to be around others who can relate to their experience.

I’m OK with this, I read it all. Is this really such a good idea?

I’m not sliming the idea…. just the logic for those with “A,” the shop owners, and customers.

I guess it comes down to the degree of mental deteriation.

Great idea. Innovative and humane. Honors the individuals who are still individuals even with AD.
So does my memoir SWIMMING SOLO: A Daughter’s Memoir of Her Parents, His Parents & Alzheimer’s Disease.

I am a grad. student and feel that this is an important step forward, even when my mom lost the ability to recognize family members, she was happiest in social situations where she was one of the crowd, e.i., fishing groups, kids school events, beauty parlor & shopping. I would like to find out more about theatre games, I am x dancer and doing movement. Also want to visit cafe or see video to help raise interest here in Sacramento. Cheers & hasta luego, celebrate the achievements and genius of folks in Santa Fe.
