Greenwood Market has signed a lease extension through June 1, 2012. The market’s lease had been set to expire in October 2011, but Greenwood Market Store Director Patty Nolan tells us they have signed an extension.

Neighboring Fred Meyer plans a down-to-the-studs remodel of its existing store and the Greenwood Market building as part of a major renovation.
Thanks to gdog for the tip!

I couldn’t agree more with the last post.

That is the best news I’ve heard all day! I love Greenwood Market and was already mourning the impending loss to our neighborhood and community. This is great news for me and my family (everyone there is so great to my kid — he loves to go and get his hand stamped)! Greenwood Market, we will shop at your market as long as you are with us! Thanks for the good news!

Is there any hope of keeping it longer? Save Greenwood Market!

I love the Greenwood Market. I live in Crown Hill, but get off the bus there, shop and walk home 2 or 3 times a week. I won’t be doing that once FM has a grocery there.

I’m curious what this will mean to the remodel of the Fred Meyer. I, for I’ve, am looking forward bring able to walk to my grocery store of choice instead of driving down to Leary.

Greenwood Market has the best selection of bulk herbs and spices. Great staff all around but especially in produce and in the meat department. And so cool to see Dave Matthews and the kids in there one day.

Oh this pleases me so much! I used to cashier there and miss the people dearly.

Woooohooooo! A few more months of happy shopping. I hope to read another post next year about another extension…and another one after that. WE LOVE GREENWOOD MARKET!

Yea! Definitely good news. I hope the owners will relocate to a new location in the neighborhood when they do finally have to move.

If anyone from Town & Country is listening, I’d like to have one of your stores fill in the enormous Vitamilk hole at Green Lake.

Oh so happy about this!

Poor selection plus high prices = no shopping at Greenwood Market for me (friendly staff not something I really care about in a grocery store – maybe a west coast thing?) – but I know it sure does have its fans!
15 Tahomajim // Jan 20, 2011 at 10:04 pm
I prefer Ballard Market as they have a better fish market…. deli… & wine section. I’m happy everybody is happy. Greenwood Market is OK, but not my favorite. I much prefer it over Safeway.
16 iheartgreenwoodmarket // Jan 20, 2011 at 11:13 pm
IronCityMike, where do you shop? (Not being snarky, honestly curious.) I’ve found Greenwood Market’s prices to be the lowest in the area — much better than Safeway (and I really like the selection).

we also like Greenwood Market – good selection, quite a bit of organic veggies, good sale prices, nice ‘vibe’

GrnwdMkt is remarkable, to this shopper at least, in many ways. For this shopper, they have a fine selection of what I use in a good sized space. The store is not so large that it takes days to get from vegetables to meats! I’ve always found the employees considerate and friendly. Prices are at least competitive and generally lower than elsewhere, particularly their sale items. They have a larger regular supply of special interest items that I use (low-salt & vegan) than other stores. Needless to say, they are my grocery store of choice and I am happy to see they will be around a bit longer.

This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time! We love the market….have been grumbling ever since we heard of it’s impending end. Having local, convenient, friendly stores is a BIG part of why we love our ‘hood, and GM is definitiely the most important part of that….Their selection meets our lifestyle unlike any other place around! Long live Greenwood Market!

Excellent news! Greenwood Market is the best grocery store in the area. Prices are OK (not always the cheapest), but that’s not why I shop there. I go for the selection and the experience. I love that the staff is friendly (howdy Betty), but the key is that they’re genuine. They’re not like mall store greeters, facetiously grinning and robot-helloing everyone who comes in the door.
They have the right stuff for our household, good bulk, good produce, nice specialty items, good beer selection… Stick around, GM, we love you.
22 Neighbor/Mom // Jan 21, 2011 at 10:36 am
@Joe-
You nailed the genuine thing. I cannot stand when the Safeway staff mechanically “hellos” me and asks if I’m finding everything OK. Sometimes they ask you three times without looking up to know its still you, while you’ve just moved from apples to tomatoes. And then of course when you check out and they have to thank you by name regardless of how hard it is for them to read/guess/pronounce/butcher your name on the receipt. I don’t know why it irks me so much, but it just sends me running back to G’wood market. Indeed, howdy to Betty et al!
And Safeway dose have SOME lower priced groceries. But if you buy any organics, quality brands, vegetarian products, quality bread, etc then QFC and Safeway just mark up those items higher in their “specialty” section. G’wood market incorporates them into the mainstream, puts them on sale often, and offers a better value.

iheartgreenwoodmarket, you really find Greenwood Market to be chearper then Safeway? We must be buying different things. I like them for bulk, but for the majority of my shopping i have to go elsewhere.
And honestly, this is a matter between landlord and tenant. I don’t think there is a way we can “Save” Greenwood Market

I wish they’d put in the thing that would unite the community and make everyone happy: a Whole Foods.
25 Ballardite // Jan 21, 2011 at 5:47 pm
Wahoo! Anything to help the independent grocery store! Kroger go home!
26 Ballardite // Jan 21, 2011 at 5:48 pm
Whole Foods is a right-wing mega-corp like Kroger BOOOO!
27 Grassfed // Jan 21, 2011 at 6:15 pm
While I do not shop that often at greenwood market (Haven’t been there in years), I do go to Ballard Market from time to time and I much prefer Fred Meyer. Fred Meyer is much cheaper and Ballard Market has very poor selection (although there meat/seafood and bakery are superb). I can only presume Greenwood Market is about the same. Fred Meyer is also union.
28 Carrie // Jan 21, 2011 at 6:46 pm
@grassfed Town and Country Markets is union too. just FYI.

thank goodness! So glad we’ll still get to see John, Valerie, Julie, Music and the rest of the wonderful people at G-wood market!

GAWD my whole family (ages 4 and up) has a (platonic) crush on Betty. And everyone else at Greenwood Market. You guys are awesome, and we love your store.

I visit Seattle twice a year, my daughter lives on Crown Hill, and always visit Greenwood Market.
It is a great store and their fruit and veg. are superb, wonderful choice and so fresh and tasty.
Prices are great, compared with the UK, we live in ‘rip off Britain’.

In early 2009,
Puget Sound Consumers’ Checkbook (www.checkbook.org)
published its grocer ratings.
Greenwood Market ranked #1 in overall quality.
35 Iron City Mike // Jan 24, 2011 at 9:01 am
Where do I shop? First, if you guys have never been to a Wegmans or Giant Eagle Market District, you don’t know what you are missing! But limited to Seattle area selections, most shopping is at Safeway which seems to have the best balance of price/selection. Ocassional trips to Trader Joes (for some unique items) and QFC (priciest, but again some things I can’t get anywhere else)
36 sunset su // Jan 25, 2011 at 4:48 pm
Why would you want to eat anything that comes out of Fred Meyer or Safeway? The food at Greenwood Market and Ballard Market is healthier and more likely to be regionally produced. The store is union.
I second the suggestion that Town & Country build a store in the old Vita-Milk Dairy site in Green Lake. Since Albertson’s shut down, that neighborhood has no place to buy groceries.
37 Anne // Jan 25, 2011 at 6:08 pm
sunset su, you are a snob
38 Jerrica // Jan 26, 2011 at 6:40 pm
Why is FM trying to sell groceries when QFC is right down the street? They are both Kroger…Wouldn’t it be awesome if they worked WITH Gwood Market to make it bigger and better and keep the community happy?
39 Matt // Jan 29, 2011 at 12:30 am
Prices at GM (and all Town and Country Markets) are more than fair; I’ve worked in the grocery distribution biz, and I’ve seen the supplier prices they deal with; grocery (and the food industry) is not a high margin business per se. Large grocery giants like Safeway and (gasp) Kroger can offer you seemingly lower prices for similar items, but the true cost of the products they are selling are part of a pretty large shell game- offset by the sale of gasoline, furniture, etc., as well as aggressive labor cost reduction methods and continent-long supply chains that rely on cheap oil. I applaud Town and Country and others like it (Ken’s, PCC, and others) for their commitments to their neighborhoods, their employees, and the suppliers they buy from. And I second the “Betty Rocks” comment!
