PAWS Cat City leaving Greenwood for U-District

November 4th, 2010 · 29 Comments

PAWS Cat City at 8503 Greenwood Ave. N. announced today that it is moving out of Greenwood and into a larger space in the University District.

PAWS Cat City has been in Greenwood for more than 13 years. It will move by mid-December to 5200 Roosevelt Way NE.

“It was a bittersweet decision,” PAWS Executive Director Annette Laico said in a press release. “Greenwood has been such a supportive, loving community, and we want to thank everyone for the many great years there. It is hard to say farewell. At the same time we’re excited for the possibilities at the new location.”

The new space will give PAWS Cat City more room for cats and a larger lobby for visitors, and it has parking.

Last year, PAWS Cat City found homes for more than 850 cats and kittens.

So, with PAWS closing, and the Greenwood Academy of Hair already closed, who’s going to be the new “anchor tenant” of 85th and G’Wood?

  • 2 Leafy // Nov 4, 2010 at 4:14 pm

    Greenwood Ghost Town

While I am sad to see they are leaving, I am happy that they are getting a larger space to more accomodate the kitties :)

my son on the other hand is gonna be heartbroken…..

Well, this makes me sad too, but anything that’s better for more adoptions makes me happy. I have a 1-year-old and 2-year-old cats that I adopted on Halloween 2009. I ride the bus or walk every place I go, so having PAWS there was so great.

Bittersweet indeed. I’ll miss having them so close, but they did need more room.

Those empty storefronts are worrisome. Two of the four corners are dead now. With the scrapped re-develop over at Fred Meyer, it looks like Greenwood is in a bit of a decline.

I like to play the game of “What would I like to see in those spaces?”

On the Northwest corner, our neighborhood needs a great bakery, something like Besalu, but bigger. Or Essential Bakery. They’d have to have good breakfasts too, and no TVs on the wall.

In the PAWS place, how about a record/cd store – Sonic Boom?

On the Southeast corner – maybe a burger joint. I think there used to be one there years ago.

What would you all like to see?

  • 7 MM // Nov 4, 2010 at 8:15 pm

    definitely bittersweet.
I like Joe’s ideas. I don’t want downtown Greenwood to resemble downtown Lake City, but I get reminded of Lake City more and more.

  • 8 MM // Nov 4, 2010 at 8:16 pm

I think we need more clothing stores, gift stores, etc. Right now almost everything we have centers around food or drink.

  • 9 #6 // Nov 4, 2010 at 9:00 pm

    Bring Back Pho Tic Tac!

  • 10 Tahomajim // Nov 4, 2010 at 9:04 pm

    Three questions:
What’s going in Oroweat after Dec. 31st?
Anybody want to guess how long will that space be empty?
Yes, we need diversity in commercial stores. Phinneywood has many coffee shops and restaurants. Hair salons, grocery stores, pubs, antiques, dry cleaners, and book stores. What do we really need/want?

  • 11 Leafy // Nov 4, 2010 at 10:28 pm

A decent breakfast joint in the old Academy of Hair place would be perfect.

  • 12 jessica // Nov 4, 2010 at 10:40 pm

Pho tic tic and teriyaki MUCH MISSED!!!!! Please not another coffee shop…

  • 13 Jon // Nov 4, 2010 at 11:18 pm

    :(

The landlord there is apparently unrealistic with his prices. At least that’s what she told me.

What a shame. I love Cat City. I hope prices go down to attract some new businesses…

“Greenwood is in a bit of a decline.” –
In case you hadn’t noticed the Whole World is in “a bit of a decline”.

  • 15 sezdog // Nov 5, 2010 at 9:55 am

Sad to see them go, but glad they’ll have more space. Our dog will miss watching the kittens.

I second the “vote” for a good breakfast place, a bakery, or a good arts & crafts supply store.

  • 16 W. F. // Nov 5, 2010 at 12:01 pm

The landlord of that building needs to take a long, hard look at the ridiculous prices they are charging. We’re never going to get a record store or burger joint because they can’t afford the rent.
    Greenwood Ghost Town, indeed!

    Who’s next?

    Well, last I heard,
Romio’s was still nervous about the condition of the water lines under 85th/Greenwood that had repeatedly flooded them
    (http://www.phinneywood.com/2009/08/12/85th-greenwood-intersection-flooded/).

    (8523 _ Greenwood Ave N) — Romio’s Pizza.
(8515 _ Greenwood Ave N) — Greenwood Neighborhood Service Center. (Planning to close in 2010.)
(8503 _ Greenwood Ave N) — PAWS Cat City. (Planning to close in 2010.)
(8501 _ Greenwood Ave N) — Greenwood Academy of Hair. (Became closed in 2010.)

For $10 the Greenwood-Phinney Chamber Of Commerce will let you ask them how you can help.
    (Friday) November 5, 2010 @ 11:30.
$5 for members, $10 for guests.

    Regarding the ‘voting’,
there was a vote a few years ago…
‘ice cream shop’ got a lot of votes…
Sweet On You then opened and has now closed.
Does anyone remember that there was a CD store in that block briefly a few years ago, near the location currently occupied by Wayward Coffee?

A vote might encourage a particular type of tenant to give it a try,
but for those aiming to bring a good breakfast place,
the best strategy might be patronize Greenwood’s many other excellent breakfast spots,
to show that there would be customers for a newcomer.

#14 let’s thank George W. for starting two wars, letting his cronies raid the U.S. treasury, and mis-managing the economy. All I read about is the Obama stimulus… and nothing said about the $750 billion tax payers gave to Bush to bail out AIG, Freddy & Fanny.
And Yes, Patty M. voted for the bailout… only to have it used against her in this election. Those who made the Rossi ads convienently failed to add that EVERY Republlican voted as Patty M. did. Shame, shame, shame. Rossi would have voted with Patty on the Bush bank bailout.

I’d like a good clean Thai and/or fresh seafood take away restaurant in GW/Phinney. Also a good seat of the pants auto repair shop. I’m not jazzed about any of the 3-4 we have. I know John is good but I don’t drive a BMW or Porsche. The rest I’ve used one time and never returned for different reasons. I miss the cobbler…. have you looked…. the closest place to have shoes repaired is in Ballard. It take’s 2-3 weeks to have good shoes fixed which tells me we need more. Yes, rent is high. Too high for commercial establishments……right on #15 & 13. I’ll support a really good bakery…. one that seduces you with aromas when you walk in the door. Good suggestion #15.

  • 19 Whopper // Nov 6, 2010 at 12:51 pm

” $750 billion tax payers gave to Bush to bail out AIG, Freddy & Fanny.”

Most of which (TARP) has been paid back, with interest. …except for the gub’ment run Fanny and Freddie, that you can kiss goodbye.

Would you have preferred the entire US banking system, and your savings, to vanish? You think FDIC would have covered you then?

So, back to the subject at hand, where can someone find some good pussy in Greenwood now?

  • 20 Tahomajim // Nov 6, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    No Whop,
I did not want to see the US banking system fail. I think you missed my two points. We bailed out two banks and an insurance company. Without the stimulus the rest of the US commerece might have failed. I sense you prefer bankers and insurance Cos. over General Motors, etc. I’ve always remembered this quote from Thomas Jefferson, “we have more to fear from the banks than the militia.”

The fact that Rossi slimed Murray in his campaign ads because she voted for the bailout…. when you know darn well he would have too if he was in her position was my second point.

Sounds like you need a pussy. Now we know why you’ve become so ornary. Meow, meow!

  • 21 anotherneighbor // Nov 7, 2010 at 12:45 am

MM – seriously? there are a TON of clothing and gift stores, just go south on Greenwood, past about 75th or so.

I’d love to see an arts/crafts supply store, too. I wind up going to the U district for my supplies any time I run out… I think a record/CD store is just going to fail – seems like everyone is buying their music online now.

  • 22 WF // Nov 7, 2010 at 11:06 am

The CD store we had that failed…prices were too high for a used music store. As for breakfast, eat at Pete’s Eggnest. Great breakfast!

  • 23 Leafy // Nov 7, 2010 at 11:55 am

FYI: the record/CD store was in the space now occupied by “Nu’s Noodles” and it was called “Golden Shower Of Hits” (really!). Hardly ever saw anyone in there buying stuff…

Our cities mayor should really take a long hard look at his own neighborhood, especially the 85th/Greenwood area – the ridiculous cracked sidewalks (and lack of), escalating numbers of empty storefronts etc and come up with a plan of action to lift Greenwood out of the peat bog.

  • 24 Charp // Nov 8, 2010 at 10:23 am

As a former resident of the apartments above the former Greenwood Academy of Hair, I have to agree that the landlord has some unreasonable expectations for rent. After the terms of our initial lease expired, they tried to raise our rent 20% but we successfully argued them down to a mere 10% increase.

When we first looked at moving in to those apartments, we were asked by a family member who works in the realty business what we would do when they tore the building down in two years. That was six years ago now, but given all of the loses and what sounds like an effort to price themselves out of the market and push the vacancy rate, I’m beginning to wonder if we won’t see a completely new building going in there in the future.

While the apartments are sound, the lower units would require MUCH work, especially the former GAH space, and I don’t think they(the owners)’re prepared to pay for any upgrades.

  • 25 PhinneyNeighbor // Nov 8, 2010 at 11:53 am

There hasn’t been a good gift store since Terra Mar went out though Sasquatch has some neat things for a particular type of gift – their recycled picture frames are really cool. There are 5 clothing stores that I count. One is consignment. Two of them only sell stuff for junior sized people. One is pretty pricey though it has some nice things. I haven’t been in the new one yet.

I second the request for a good cobbler. I go to the guy at U. Village because he does great work and will do my shoes while I wait. It would be handy to have one walking distance. A bakery would also be cool. Bonus points if they make black and whites which I haven’t been able to find since leaving the east coast.

  • 26 tat // Nov 8, 2010 at 7:11 pm

PhinneyNeighbor – If by “black and whites” you are referring to the chocolate cookies that are half dipped in white chocolate, Specialties bakery has them and they are delicious. Unfortunately, they are not close to Greenwood. I agree that a good bakery in the hood would be great! A cross-fit type gym would also be kind of cool in the Greenwood Academy of Hair space.

  • 27 Tim // Nov 8, 2010 at 10:52 pm

I’d love to see a sandwich place like the Honey Hole on Capitol Hill, or maybe a place like Cafe Presse that has breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as a liquor license. I feel like Greenwood is far from declining. The street used to be so dead, especially after 6pm…nothing but antique stores and seedy bars. Now with Naked City, Gainsbough, New’s Noodles, Mr Gyro, etc, we have so many more choices for food/drink and the streets are more vibrant in the evenings. Greenwood seems to be becoming a destination neighborhood. Ecxited to see what comes in next.

  • 28 Penny // Nov 9, 2010 at 8:26 am

A think a gym is an excellent idea. There isn’t a decent one in the area at all.

  • 29 Julie // Nov 9, 2010 at 9:16 am

tat – On the East Coast, a black & white is a round cake-like pastry with half chocolate frosting and half white. Similar to the cookie but much lighter.

Now you have me going. There aren’t really good cannolis out here either. May have to go back next summer for one of the North End festivals!
