Pig Out to end hunger in Phinney-Greenwood

by | Sep 24, 2010

Dozens of Phinney and Greenwood restaurants are once again donating a portion of their sales from one night to benefit the Phinney Neighborhood Association soup kitchens. The 8th annual “Phabulous Phinney Pig Out” is Thursday, Oct. 14.

In collaboration with St. John United Lutheran Church on Phinney Ridge and Crown Lutheran Church (in collaboration with Compass Housing Alliance) in Ballard, the PNA operates two soup kitchens. Three times a week, the soup kitchens serve more than 200 meals to low income, disabled and elderly neighborhood residents. Last year, the soup kitchens served a total of more than 23,000 meals. Grants from the City, volunteers and donated food take care of a large percentage of the cost of this program but not all of it.
To keep this program strong, 24 Phinney/Greenwood restaurants have agreed to donate a portion of their sales on Oct.14 to the soup kitchens. To make this effort successful, however, area residents are being urged to “Pig Out” all day long – breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and coffee after that. It’s as simple as that.
