A man out for a walk with his young daughter was mugged in the middle of the day. It happened around noon last Wednesday (9/1) near 87th and Palatine. (Clarification: the police report was taken in the 100 block of NW 85th Street, but the mugging happened at 87th and Palatine). The man had earlier taken out some cash from his account when the mugger came up from behind him saying “Give me all your money and I won’t hurt you.” The man, who was pushing his daughter in a stroller at the time, gave the thief $540. The mugger ran off and the victim didn’t get a good look at him. No one was hurt.

Weird. There’s no bank at 87th and Palatine. Just some houses and an empty lot behind Walgreen’s.
2 Philbert // Sep 7, 2010 at 11:01 am
I was gonna say. . . isn’t there just a sink-hole at that corner?
3 Greenwood // Sep 7, 2010 at 11:06 am
Was it the bank inside Safeway?
4 Whopper // Sep 7, 2010 at 11:49 am
Seriously, they’re mugging stroller dads in broad daylight now?
Stay classy Green’hood!

I don’t use ATMs….you’re a neon target!
6 daniel // Sep 7, 2010 at 12:22 pm
Who has that much cash on hand? Also, isn’t the ATM withdraw limit $200?
7 Whopper // Sep 7, 2010 at 1:09 pm
I use ATMs. Just not in s****y neighborhoods.
8 Trix // Sep 7, 2010 at 1:12 pm
Oh, yeah, it’s the victim’s fault. Again.
ATM, or seen walking out of a bank, nobody expects to get mugged in brood daylight and pushing their kid on a stroller.

“nobody expects to get mugged in brood daylight and pushing their kid on a stroller.”
Well, at least not in a nice neighborhood, but this was Green’hood.

Whopper — with all due respect (“all” may or may not be greater than zero), I live and work in Greenwood and find your comments about Greenwood being a “sh*tty neighborhood” offensive. You act as if it’s Compton, California and if you look at people wrong you’ll get shot. Grow up, it’s a fairly normal neighborhood, and muggings — day or night — around banks or in the middle of no where — are wrong, illegal, and unacceptable.
If you can’t provide nice comments, please stop trolling posts looking for good opportunities to insert witty comments and also — if you live in Greenwood, you’re probably part of the problem. Please move on.
11 Greenwood // Sep 7, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Resident, nothing about his comments is ever witty. Don’t flatter him. I wish his ip address would get blocked. Would love it if you guys would switch to Facebook commenting system or crowdsourcing of some kind. Whopper alwas destroys the quality of the discussions on here.
12 Whopper // Sep 7, 2010 at 4:17 pm
Compton? Hardly, but gentrification is helping. Another 5-10 years of upward mobility and it should be safe for stroller dads to get money from an ATM.
13 Seattle mike // Sep 7, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Good point about the ATM limit. How did this guy get $540? This sounds really fishy. Could it be some insurance scam? And the Safeway is on the other side of Greeenwood from Palatine.
14 Whopper // Sep 7, 2010 at 5:22 pm
“How did this guy get $540″
Nothing fishy about it, it depends on your bank. One of my banks let’s me take out $400 a day, another lets me take out up to $1200 a day (in $400 batches). If you have a big account, good credit and been with a bank long enough, one call to your banker and they can reset your limit.
But you’re right, it’s just another stroller dad out scamming someone….damn stroller dads, they’re all crooks.

I’ve fallen off the horse from reading phinneywood a bit lately but one other thing about this post is that it’s not from Doree or Dale. Who’s Doug?
Whopper is a troll – do not feed the trolls: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)
16 hsofia // Sep 7, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Some banks it’s $300 limit, others are $500 … it varies. Also, he could have started off with cash already, and just taken out more. In the past I’ve taken out that kind of cash if I were going to make a big Craigslist purchase.
In any case, it’s wrong – even if it was $200 or $20. That’s a frightening experience – esp. with your baby right there. And in broad daylight, people don’t expect to be mugged.
17 Doree // Sep 7, 2010 at 8:15 pm
patrick – The post was written by Doug Alder, who is now the executive editor for all the Next Door Media sites (there are now 10). He looks through all the police reports and posts them for all our neighborhoods, and takes over editorial duties when we’re out of town or otherwise busy (like at our “real” jobs).
18 RR // Sep 7, 2010 at 10:16 pm
Isn’t there a Bank of America there?
This really sucks.
19 JM // Sep 8, 2010 at 10:40 am
Sounds dangerous. There are a couple of ATMs in the area for Wells Fargo and Chase Bank. There are usually a few sketchy people hanging around too.
20 Sarah // Sep 8, 2010 at 11:05 am
What on earth does having a kid in a stroller have to do with it? It’s completely irrelevant. NOBODY should be mugged, regardless of whether they have a stroller, a dog, a suitcase, a pony, etc.
21 E.S. // Sep 8, 2010 at 12:29 pm
Especially a pony.
22 PonyLover // Sep 8, 2010 at 12:51 pm
@Sarah – If I saw someone with a pony in Greenwood, I would give THEM money!
23 gdog // Sep 8, 2010 at 2:55 pm
What the hell is the matter with you people? What is it with Seattleites and their ability to question or blame the victim in every damn circumstance? Who cares how he got his money out? (And the story doesn’t say ATM, btw…just that he got money out. As in, from is bank. As in, from the actual people who work in the bank. They exist!) Are you really trying to say that the guy should have known better than to take his own money out of his own account in his own neighborhood in the middle of the day? How dare he! He brought it on himself, no doubt. Stop trying to pick apart the guy. And yes, Sarah, it is worse that this f*** held up a guy with his baby daughter…that’s two lives at risk. It shows a supreme callousness toward an infant human life, which begs the question, what else his he capable of?
24 Jerry // Sep 8, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Hey we have miniature goats walking around with harnesses and dog collars in our neighborhood! Why not ponies! Better yet, maybe an alligator. I’d like to see the local meth- head mug me while walking my pet alligator.
25 iheartgreenwood // Sep 8, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I love phinneywood.com, but hate these posters. Blaming the victim again — “Don’t use ATMs!” “What is he doing taking out that much money?!” You guys suck. How ’bout some compassion for the guy who got mugged, and his poor kid, who was also in danger? Are you attacking the victim so you can distance yourself to buy into the illusion that our community is safe? And Whopper, why do you spend so much time reading a blog about Greenwood if you hate it so much? Go read about Bellevue, loser. But after this one, I may need to change my name. I don’t heart Greenwood anymore. My beloved family-friendly neighborhood has been taken over by thugs and thieves (and neighbors who blame the victim from anonymous posts, instead of trying to help keep us all safe). I’m getting a gun, so when this guy tried to attack me pushing my baby’s stroller, I’ll blow his face off. of course, I’m sure you’ll all whine about that, too.
26 iheartgreenwood // Sep 8, 2010 at 3:01 pm
Go gdog! What is wrong with these people? And Pony Lover and Jerry, it’s not a joke. See how funny it is when you’re the one getting held up with your kid/sister/niece/nephew/wife/husband/neighbor/friend in tow. For those who have been targets of crime in this community, myself included, it’s not a joke. Enough blaming the victim, and blaming the cops. This “community” is heartless.
27 Jerry // Sep 8, 2010 at 3:28 pm
Wahhh, wahhh, go back to California loser.
28 iheartgreenwood // Sep 8, 2010 at 3:56 pm
I’m not from California, Jerry, so while you may think you’re terribly clever, you’re wrong AND an idiot.
29 iheartgreenwood // Sep 8, 2010 at 3:57 pm
P.S. Jerry, next time I hope he gets you. Then we’ll see who whines.

“But hey, what do I care, I don’t live in Green’hood….”
Hey Whopper, maybe you should troll around a neighborhood site you actually live in. “what do I care”… apparently a lot considering how much you post here. I recommend focusing your energies on something constructive.
DEFINITELY a troller… and a bad one at that. Trolling is an art my friend. And you are just a finger painter.
31 Whopper // Sep 8, 2010 at 4:13 pm
Once I move out of my Mom’s basement I’ll probably move to South Seattle where there is no crime… that and I can’t afford to live in Greenwood. Deep down I’m envious. My apologies to everyone here.

Personally I enjoy Whoppers comment/trolls – livens things up a bit! I hope no one who reads this board actually takes his/her comments seriously. Have a sense of humor people! Sheesh.

“Whopper, why do you spend so much time reading a blog about Greenwood if you hate it so much? ”
“Hey Whopper, maybe you should troll around a neighborhood site you actually live in”
Errrrrr…..maybe because someone connected Green’hood to Phinney on this blog? Read its name: PHINNEYwood……. It’s tweakers meets Tibetan prayer flags. It’s pickups parked on the lawn meets Prius with carbon pass sticker. It’s twinkies meets $5 heirloom organic tomatoes. It’s bog meets mountain views. It’s mugger meets stroller dad.
Personally, I want a divorce from the Green’hoodies. How about a check point at 85th?
36 Kelly // Sep 8, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Yikes! How horrible. I was just walking on Greenwood with my girls in a stroller today. Thanks for letting me know – Phinneywood – I’ll be sure and watch out.
37 J // Sep 8, 2010 at 6:34 pm
“Personally, I want a divorce from the Green’hoodies. How about a check point at 85th?”
How about the more likely and feasible option B? Back to the burbs, douchebag.
38 Whopper // Sep 8, 2010 at 6:55 pm
“Back to the burbs”
I thought Phinney was a ‘burb? Single family homes, garages, gardens, happy-go lucky-kids. All we need are sock hops.
Maybe you’re confused and think Phinney is the Bronx or some gritty inner city ‘hood?
I have no problem with thuggery in Green’hood, all I ask is that you keep it there. I’m tired of tweakers rummaging through my car at 4am for 50 cents and my old Talking heads cds.
39 Hinto // Sep 8, 2010 at 7:21 pm
This thread is completely out of hand
40 J // Sep 8, 2010 at 10:55 pm
Damn whopper… I almost feel sorry for you
41 Whopper // Sep 9, 2010 at 11:58 am
Oh crap, I just realized that Phinney has similar crimes and that it’s not from Greenwood. I do like trolling on Aurora for companionship though. I’m a bit lonely with my sh*tty attitude.
42 Whopper // Sep 9, 2010 at 12:04 pm
I’m surprised Ballard residents don’t have a deep seeded hatred for Crown Hill like I do for Greenwood. It just makes no sense.
43 iheartgreenwood // Sep 9, 2010 at 12:33 pm
Okay, Whopper, I concede. Compared to Phinney, Greenwood is a ‘hood . Frankly, I wish I could afford to move to Phinney.
44 I Heart Greenwood More // Sep 9, 2010 at 2:48 pm
It’s good enough for the Mayor of Seattle though isn’t it?
45 Seattle mike // Sep 9, 2010 at 3:39 pm
Whoa, some people have been drinking too much coffee. I was only saying that it seemed odd to have that much cash AND that there is no bank or ATM at that intersection. Perhaps the officer who wrote up the report messed up.
46 Greenwood // Sep 9, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Whopper grew up on Mercer Island. He tryin’ to be a city boy, but fear instills him with feelings of impotence. The only cure is posting online vitriol to restore his sense if virility.
47 J // Sep 10, 2010 at 11:45 am
A Mercer Island douchebag? Go figure. He probably got bullied a lot in high school, now this is his way of getting back at the world. Pretty sad, man.
