85th St. Cafe and Deli being remodeled

September 3rd, 2010 · 20 Comments

The doors have been locked at the 85th St. Cafe and Deli on the corner of North 85th Street and Greenwood Avenue North for a couple of weeks, and several readers have wondered if the business was closed. Owner Timur Leno tells us the cafe is being remodeled. No more information was available.

Leno used to own nearby Olive You, but just sold it to his friend Paola Corsini, who is opening The Olive and Grape next Friday. Leno also owns Olive You in Kirkland.

He should start by getting rid of that hotdog character eyesore.

I agree. I’d be very happy if they removed word “Slum” from their graphics also.

Dang, I was hoping this was the end of the Slum City and someone would buy that property to open a “real” business.

Where is this? On the southeast corner of 85th and Greenwood? What used to be the sugar place?

shopdog – Yup, that’s the one. Sorry I forgot to put the location in the original post. I just updated it.

The quality of food at this place is horrible! What they call Gelato is just regular ice cream.
Please don’t call regular ice cream, Gelato…it is insulting!

I really hate to see businesses go down during a recession, but I was hoping that on this one. They have bad food and bad service. Maybe the remodeling will get rid of the strong antifreeze smell that’s so distinct in the store.. Yum.

2 more cents – if there was a good hot dog place, a good ice cream or gelato place, or a good deli at that corner, it would be great. Unfortunatley with Slum City we had neither. Pick a theme and go with it!

To add 1 cent to ICM- Pick a theme and do that 1 theme RIGHT. We went there a few times…got same welcoming feeling as the owners face in this pic. Now we go a bit further to Phinney Market for ice cream….they do it right!!

Neptune carries Molly Moon ice cream, thats good enough for me. On the other hand i did like their hot dogs, and enjoyed them being there for a quick cheap lunch.

Nice shot. Where’s the photo credit?

  • 13 Indeed // Sep 3, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Here’s your credit – he looks sad because his store sucks. Happy?

Hey, I love the Hot Dog Guy! He’s a handy reminder you’re entering Green’hood and you better watch your back.

That place was just cheap, we went in once and they were charging 5$ for a slice of what was obviously a Costco chocolate cake!! Olive you was just as bad…maybe he likes his Bellevue location better.

If that craigslist ad is true, then the owner is a real jerk! Why would he tell Phinneywood that he’s remodeling if he was selling the place? Oh, right, probably the same reason he kept telling people that Olive You was “opening soon” month after month following the arson, and then he sold that business as well. Good riddance!

  • 18 R // Sep 6, 2010 at 8:35 am

    FYI,
    – “Tim”, would be “Timur Leno”, proprietor of Olive You (89 Kirkland Ave) (formerly Marina Park Grill).
    – “No hood” may be a reference to a lack of overhead ventilation.

  • 19 Deb S // Sep 6, 2010 at 9:08 am

Weird, he’s advertising it as a hotdog place, but not ice cream, so clearly he’s keeping that equipment.

  • 20 06_11_000 // Sep 7, 2010 at 12:08 pm

Who cares! The point is…he’s leaving the neighborhood and as someone else has said….good riddance!!! I’m tired of jerks thinking they can just open a food business and serve sub-standard food. After reading comments/reviews about both of his businesses (Olive You and the “gelato”/hot dog place), I wouldn’t set foot in either place.
