The Greenwood Senior Center is hosting a forum on Hispanic/Latino immigration issues at 12 p.m. on Monday, April 19.
The misconceptions surrounding this issue are numerous and this forum will shed some light on what is myth and what is fact. The forum will consist of a panel of representatives from some of Seattle and Washington’s Hispanic/Latino-focused organizations: One America, Washington Community Action Network, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and Casa Latina.
Topics include:
A) History and Push-and-Pull factors of immigration
B) The effect immigration has on home countries
C) Issues surrounding immigration/immigrants in the US
D) Presence of Hispanics/Latinos in the workplace
The forum will cover social, political, and economic topics and inspire conversation within the community.
The panel will also field audience questions as time permits. The Greenwood Senior Center is at 525 N. 85th St. For more information, email or call Marianne at 206-297-0875, ext 31.

I would not expect an unbiased Q&A session with this group, especially Casa Latina. Casa Latina operates a business which they pay NO TAX and they don’t have to pay L&I, even though if one of their workers get hurt, they can use L&I (anyone can, it just increases ALL businesses rates). It’s not fair we are letting illegals in AND letting them work tax free. They get all the perks without any of our added expenses.

We must close our porous borders to the illegals, lest another bin Ladin slips into our country and steal jobs from a U.S. family. Pretty soon we will be the minority. How will THAT feel?!?

Um, what do you mean “we” will be the minority? Are only white people real Americans?
Illegals do not work “tax free”. In fact, they pay taxes (withholding, social security, sales, etc.) but are barred from receiving many services (no Social Security, for instance).
What is the basis for your contention that Casa Latina (a) pays no tax (b) pays no L&I or (c) hires illegals? Non-profits pay L&I, trust me.
Immigration is the lifeblood of this country and always has been. The vast majority of WHITE people in the US are descended from fairly recent immigrants (1880s or later).

Illegal immigrants are not the life blood of America. They DO NOT pay their taxes. They claim more exemptions then they have and the person who owns the stolen SS# is the one stuck with the tax bill. They pay NO property taxes but send their kids to school for free. They don’t pay their hospital bills. I’ve sat in the ER listening to them laugh at Americans for paying for their medical care. Crime has gone way up because of the gangs and crime the people here illegally bring with them. They are criminals not immigrants!
Why is no one going after their countries of origin for not taking care of their citizens? Why is it the US responsibility to take care of these criminals? They are here illegally, they are working (if they work) illegally, they use stolen social security numbers, they pay no taxes, they don’t file their taxes, they don’t carry insurance on their cars, they don’t pay their traffic tickets, the list goes on.
I’m sick of these criminals coming here and demanding things. Their sense of entitlement is disgusting!! The US doesn’t owe them a thing. If they are so upset about not having rights them why don’t they go back home and have some respect for this country by following the laws of this country and coming here legally.
I work with multiple people who are from other countries. They worked hard and came here legally. They are still working hard to better their life and the lives of their families. They volunteer their free time to better their community. I have only one word for them – welcome.
It is an insult to those that deserve to be here and worked hard to be here to compare them to the criminals that are here for a free ride and could care less about anyone but themselves.

Kels, I don’t understand your point about social security taxes. Even if they steal a ss#, the point is that ss taxes and medicare taxes are DEDUCTED from their paychecks. If they steal a ss#, that just shows that the person whose number they stole gets more credit for their ss pay ins. It doesn’t mean that the deductions don’t occur. So, in effect, the illegal is paying ss – they’re just paying in someone else’s name. And they CANNOT ever claim it because you cannot get SS benefits – even as a legal resident. Only citizens can get it. It’s what a few of my green card friends called “taxation w/o representation.”
Cheating hospitals on ER bills happens just as much by citizens as anyone else. So does crime.
To lay the blame for these problems at the feet of illiegals is misguided and misinformed. THis might help: http://www.hatefreezone.org/questions-and-answers-immigration

petsfriend they are not having all that they owe taken out of their checks. On your W4 Withholding tax form you can claim dependants. This lowers the amount of money taken out of your paycheck to pay your taxes. They claim multiple dependants even when they have none. The person with that SS# is then stuck with the bill and has to go through the trouble of proving that they didn’t work those hours and don’t owe this money.
So how many crimes do they have to commit before you admit they are criminals. It’s not about hate it’s about following the laws of this country and not ripping people off. Times are tough enough without having to pay someone else’s bill.
It is incredibly naive of you, as well as misguided and uninformed for you to take up for these criminals as if they are victims. They decided to come here illegally and they continue to break the law multiple times. They are criminals. They have no one but themselves for any problems they have while breaking the law.

Kels, you’re confusing W4 which is related to income tax w/SS and medicare taxes which are separate. What are the sources for your claims? Opinions are like gut bacteria. We all have millions of them.

I think Kels watches a little too much Fox News. Please tell me you have watched all these people fill out their employment paperwork, and then followed them home to, in fact, confirm that they have no dependents. And in this case, by all means, why not report them to the authorities, since you are so informed about their circumstances and whereabouts?
As a legal immigrant, I hope you enjoy the thousands of dollars I pump into SS every year.

I welcome people who come here legally. I do not welcome those who come here illegally. From the moment they cross the border without legal permission to be here, they have committed a crime. Thus, they are criminals. In emergency rooms, they don’t pay for their care and the hospitals can’t turn them away if it’s a life threatening condition. In Seattle, the City Council passed an ordinance that prevents the police from asking the immigration status of a person. If they could have asked, the killer of Rebecca Griego would have been taken into custody and couldn’t have snuffed out her life. he was an illegal alien from the UK.
The fact that this is a nation of immigrants has nothing to do with the current illegal immigration problem. The current problem is that they are coming here illegally and in such huge numbers that it amounts to an invasion. The fact that they demonstrate carrying the Mexican flag shows that their allegiance is not to the US but to Mexico. Their sheer arrogance is mindboggling and people who mistake this as a “tolerance” vs. “intolerance” issue completely miss the point that we have been experiencing a very damaging invasion for years. It is a net drain on our economy and a threat to our national security. It’s time to FINALLY wake up and secure our borders.

That’s what people have always said about immigrants. Most people’s ancestors came here before there was either legal or illegal immigration. There was just immigration. Then, in the early 20th century, there were quotas imposed. Plenty of non-immigrants use the ER and don’t pay. This is not an immigration-only problem.
