The Green Bean Coffeehouse, which has been sharing space with Greenwood Sip & Ship for the last few months since its former building was burned down by an arsonist, will soon move into the old McDonald’s building.

The building, on Greenwood Avenue and about North 86th Street, has been empty for several years and many people have complained about it being an eyesore, with frequent graffiti markings. The lot will someday be developed by Greenwood Shopping Center Inc., the same folks who built the new Piper Village mixed-use development and who own the land under Fred Meyer. In the meantime, the property developers had hoped someone would lease the building for a few years.
You can read all about it in Sanctuary Church’s newsletter. The church owns the Green Bean.

So glad that they’re going to be our new next door neighbor (to The GC)!

Happy it’s not a McD’s, happy it’s not gonna be empty anymore, happy the GB is the one to fill the spot…

Hope they can get the smell of the chip fryer out of the walls…..and please, no public phone out front, thugs don’t need an office on Green’hood Ave.

Read about their plans for transforming the space in the newsletter! After hearing about the plans I am even more excited!

Yay! Great to see an empty storefront filled again.

Will it be a drive through coffee shop?

Whopper, the year is 2010. “Thugs” do not have beepers anymore, they have cellphones, so your fear of payphones is especially irrational. You must be a treat at family gatherings.

In all fairness to Whopper, I live close to the McDonald’s building and there usually were a few characters hanging around the pay phone.

I’m also glad to hear that an empty location is getting filled once again. And yes payphones are still very much in use by those in society who “business” dealings are less than positive for the neighborhoods.
13 Whopper // Mar 17, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Sorry my friend, the thugs swarm to that pay phone like flies to s**t. Get rid of it.
14 Trix // Mar 17, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Um. Cell phones get dead batteries and I’ve had to search in vain for a pay phone. Regular folk use pay phones. Hope there will be one, actually.
Very happy there will be something done with that McD building at long last.

Stoesz, it’s remarks like yours which make “Rules of the road for PhinneyWood” necessary. It’s unfortunate that you cannot express yourself without using profanity. Maybe you should get a dictionary?

Wow, that’s a pretty big space for a coffeehouse within a stone’s throw of Wayward Coffee.

I see the comment containing profanity I was referring to above has been deleted. Thank you!

Good to see that space finally getting a tenant. Anyone know the news on the other coffee shop that is supposedly going in where the OK Corral used to be?. And what about the building on 85th opposite Fred Meyer which was reported to be a new eatery?

Great News! I’m happy to hear that The Green Bean will be at the old McDonald’s building. I’m with Trix about the payphone. We do need payphones in the public for emergency calls. Not everyone has a cellphone and cellphones do need to be recharged and do malfunction, get lost or left at home frequently. I have been on the road an unable to find a payphone so often it’s not funny.

Agreed, Tiktok, though I think Wayward doesn’t have much to fear — it’s open later, the vibe is very different (nerds, represent!), and frankly I find the coffee is far, far, far better. I respect Green Bean and really admire its mission, but their offerings are literally not to every taste. I’ve been feeling vaguely guilty every time I walk into Sip ‘n’ Ship with a cup full of Wayward; maybe now the healing can begin
.
(Does this mean the developer might attend to the condition of the sidewalk in front of the building? The only thing more rugged than the east side of Greenwood Ave is the west side of Greenwood Ave….)

Why couldn’t the McDonald’s stay a few more years since the building wasn’t going to be reworked immediately? Just curious.
22 anon // Mar 18, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Assuming they welcome non-Christians (I’ve heard rumors….) I will be there!
23 wally // Mar 18, 2010 at 2:57 pm
It is certainly true that there is a different vibes at Green Bean and Wayward. I guess the comparison is inescapable. I like both but for completely different reasons. I don’t think anyone really needs to take a side on this issue. Hope that this doesn’t become a battle between those who are angry at so called “Beatniks” vs. those who are angry at so called “Christians”, both terms being very loosely defined here.

Anon. It’s a community place, they welcome anyone.
25 jono17 // Mar 18, 2010 at 11:33 pm
I’ve heard rumors that anonymous people are trying to spread rumors about the Green Bean.
26 ghoul // Mar 19, 2010 at 7:41 am
bring back the mcdonalds….
27 anon // Mar 19, 2010 at 7:46 am
Actually I heard that rumor on this very blog - but willing to people the benefit of the doubt.
28 Nope // Mar 19, 2010 at 8:09 am
it’s not like Green Bean is going to check your “christian” card at the door. C’mon now, that’s just a silly statement. It’s not like you get grilled on Star Trek when you order coffee at Wayward to see if you’re worthy..
29 anon // Mar 19, 2010 at 8:49 am
Actually, on this very blog, someone reported they WERE grilled about their religious beliefs upon entering Green Bean. From your comment, I’m guessing that was a rare occurrence.
30 jono17 // Mar 19, 2010 at 5:37 pm
I am familiar the comment that the anon talks about but has misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. Anon, please read the post again.
“Jason”, the original poster, never said anything about being “grilled” about religion. In fact he states that the people at the Green Bean were not rude to him and they were not employees of the establishment. He was invited to participate in a prayer meeting was uncomfortable with. He says he politely declined and chose not to go back. Sounds like much ado about nothing to me.

Welcome back Greenbean! I’ll be glad to see the building put to use.
32 Crystal F // Apr 1, 2010 at 2:43 pm
This is awesome!!! I can’t wait for the Green Bean to get in there and clean up that part of the block.
Any word on the sidewalk getting fixed right there?
