February 25th, 2010 · 21 Comments

SeattleCrime.com is reporting that Julie McCoy, the chief of staff for Seattle Mayor (and Greenwood resident) Mike McGinn, had her house broken into last night while her family slept. The house is near Carkeek, just north of Greenwood.

The burglars made off with two cars, a 2008 BMW X5 and a 2005 GMC Yukon, owned by McCoy and her husband Bill Broadhead, owner of the consulting firm the Mercury Group.

Seattle Police Department spokesman Sean Whitcomb says the Yukon was recovered at 85th and Ashworth near Greenlake.

Not very green cars Mr Green Mayor!

Good to see the criminal-coddling class getting hit.

wow… to both the above comments… wow.

those cars don’t belong to the mayor - but to his Chief of Staff. Not sure if he should get the blame for the “greeness” of the cars…

sorry to hear about it - very scary to be robbed, especially to be robbed while you are asleep in your bed.

    ditto tw78.

Two cars from one house? Is that normal for thieves? Seems odd.

Dear Mayor McGinn - WE NEED MORE POLICE!!!! Our police/citizen ratio is about half of what it should be according to DOJ statistics for a city of our size. WE NEED MORE POLICE!

Less useless red (yellow, really) light ticketing cameras — more police officers.

Safety First! 5 children, plus a mom and dad and whoever else they probably tow around will not all fit in some cute small hybrid. I know I wish we had a sturdy vehicle for my 6 kids when we were hit by a guy running a red light now leaving me with 4 children . So lets not judge and focus on the issue at hand, shall we!?

“will not all fit in some cute small hybrid. ”

You’re right, they should take the bus and ride bicycles!

put yourself in their place–how would you feel to have someone sneak into your house while you are asleep (fortunately none of the five young children woke up!) and steal your belongings?

damn our world has become a judgemental and f’d up place. people are just angry and mean.

First off - those BMWs are hard to steal, so hats off to the thieves for pulling THAT one off. Second - hopefully this will be a wake-up call to better police presence in our neighborhood. If New York managed to clean up Times Square, we can mange to clean up Greenwood.

    How would I feel?

Well, if I was Mayor McGinn I’d start talking about ’social justice’ and the struggles of the poor……….

Next comment - this is still America, you can drive what you want, and everyone has different needs - but on the surface, living in the city and having TWO giant SUVs does seem excessive.

” this is still America, you can drive what you want”

    Really? That’s not McGinn’s worldview….

I agree with tw78… I’m sorry to hear about this. Very scary indeed!

ICM - I’m pretty sure that any car is pretty easy to steal when you get the keys from inside the houes.

Looks like patrols will be up in the Greenwood area, about time.

  • 18 Iron City Mike // Feb 26, 2010 at 10:53 am

Good point phinneynotballard, would help if I read the article.

  • 19 Phinneyman // Feb 26, 2010 at 1:00 pm

    D. Sanchez: Forgive me for asking, but what causes you to conclude that patrols “will be up” in Greenwood? Did I miss something in the article about more patrols or do you have insider information? Thanks in advance.

All I can say is, so what?

My worldview, and therefore many of my previous comments, are the result of having been the victim of exactly this kind of incident. My home growing up in Seattle was burglarized a half dozen times. As an adult, I lived in a home on 85th that was burglarized while I was a home asleep (during the middle of the day).

So why is it so special that one of McGinn’s staffers was a victim of something that happens to people in this city all the time?

Oh…maybe it’s because people think it will shake their progressive elite ivory tower perspective on the world?

    Nah.

  • 21 tw78 // Feb 26, 2010 at 7:16 pm

anon - I do agree that the fact that it was the chief of staff is not relevant - it is scary and terrible no matter who it happens to.
Are we to say “so what?” just because it did happen to an elite?
