Car leaves ‘donut’ tracks at Sandel Park

December 29th, 2009 · 12 Comments

Paul May sent us this photo of damage done to the lawn at Sandel Park.

Just yesterday we wrote about Sandel Park receiving $350,000 from Seattle Parks & Recreation to renovate the playground. Judging by all the comments to that story, the park has a serious problem with vandalism and vagrants.

    …or teenagers. Takes me back.

Perhaps security cameras should be included in the improvements.

The litter in the foreground was interesting. Usually when I come upon these scenes (Whitman, Crown Hill School sites), there are cans and bottles of beer strewn about. And usually there is one of those mini-marts/gas station arrangements where they sell single cans/bottles of beer. I think the issue is not vagrants or teenagers necessarily but do think it likely young males full of cheap beer with nothing better to do. The combination of young males, vehicles, beer often leads to this. Reducing the comingling of these items on public greenspace can be achieved in many ways.

Maybe they should spend part of that $350,000 putting heavy concrete barriers around the perimeter.

barriers would be great although it’s a large area to cover. i walk a dog around there twice a week and there are track marks from cars at least once a month.

    It’s an annual tradition there.

Happens all the time there. Its the guy who owns the red El Camino and lives in the house on the corner of 2nd ave and 90th.

Please no on the barriers. The open aspect of the park is what makes it so great. A fence or concrete would be detrimental. There must be some other solution.

If you know who it is, you should notify the police

How about a sand trap under the sod? Drive in spin your wheels and get stuck. Once your stuck all the neighbors then get free swings at your car with Parks Dept provided tools.

I love it, SPG! A barrier could also be provided that would retain the openness by placing boulders or stout bollards strategically between the trees that line the perimeter. I agree w/ Iron City Mike – if you know who ids doing this, iheartgreenwood (and if you really love Greenwood) you should notify the police.
