Beer lovers take over Phinney Center

November 15th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Saturday night’s 22nd annual Beer Taste at the Phinney Neighborhood Center brought in more than 700 people to enjoy “Beer Care for All” (a little riff on health care reform, in case you missed all those folks in medical scrubs).

The first floor was packed as a very long line of people waited outside to get in.

And the upstairs was also jammed as people moved from room to room, trying out the 30-some craft brews.

The musicians were fantastic, but I neglected to get the band’s name. If anyone knows, please put a note in comments.

First place winner, as voted on by attendees, went to Two Beers Jive Espresso Stout. Second place was Naked City Hoptari. And third place was Georgetown Superchopp.

Great brews, great music and a chance to meet your neighbors in a fun, tension-free environment! Much better way to spend the evening than on a midnight neighborhood watch. Thanks Phinney Center, we needed this!

    Many delicious beers
    + generous pours
    + good music
    + snacks
+ lots of neighbors having fun
= a fantastic event at Phinney Center

Although it got really crowded in spots, there was surprisingly never more than a one or two person wait at any tap. There was water to rinse your tasting glass (yes, GLASS, not cheesy plastic), and peanuts and pretzels to cleanse the palette. The blind auction was a fun addition too. PNA showed how a beer tasting event should be done. BRAVO!

My only suggestion for next year is to cut back on the available tickets by about 15%, or open up more space for people to mingle in, as maneuvering through the rooms and halls without spilling anyone’s beer was quite a challenge. Otherwise, the music, food, theme, and good people enjoying beer definitely had us feeling we got our money’s worth.

Thanks again to the PNA and all the breweries for a great event!

“The Jolly Farmers” is our band’s name. This yearly event is our only gig, but we all play a lot in other bands in Seattle. We love this gig since the building, the crowd, and, oh yeah, the beer make us play great, even though we can barely hear ourselves. That’s preferable to having to deal with a sound system, though. I myself have played the beer fest for at least 15 years in a row; what went on before me may be lost in the mists of time. Thanks so much to the staff of volunteers that make this event possible.

Great event…enjoyed by all, with the possible exception of the 2 gents in left foreground of second picture who either had to work OR have higher social needs than could be provided by such a wonderful crowd!

Thanks to everyone who came to the event and for your support the Phinney Neighborhood Association. We still have “Beer Care for All” scrubs for sale for $15. Email me – chardell@phinneycenter.org.
