Fire Relief Fund to make first disbursements Saturday

November 13th, 2009 · 5 Comments

The trustrees of the Greenwood Fire Relief Fund just announced that they will present checks for $1,000 each to the owners of the four businesses destroyed in the Oct. 23 arson at the Greenwood Sip & Ship, 8560 Greenwood Ave. N., at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Green Bean, one of the businesses destroyed in that fire, is temporarily taking over Sip & Ship’s coffee operations. Starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, they’re having a “mugging,” where customers can bring their own mug to enjoy a cup of coffee, then leave the cup behind to replenish Green Bean’s mismatched mug collection.

The other three businesses destroyed in that fire are C.C. Teriyaki, Szechuan Bistro and Pho Tic Tac.

Steve Giliberto, president of the Greenwod-Phinney Chamber of Commerce, said the Greenwood Fire Relief Fund at Chase Bank currently has about $4,700, and is still accepting donations.

I wonder what Todd Boettger, who was mugged and beaten within an inch of his life just a few doors down from the Sip & Ship six months ago, thinks about the Green Bean calling their own charity event a “mugging.”

I’ve been a victim of violent crime myself. “Mugging” is not funny.

I think this is great! In these hard times, it’s nice to see a community work to support one another, no matter how small, it’s the effort.

Thanks, as always, Phinneywood, for keeping us up with the information, good and bad. It’s nice to see these little silver linings amongst the wild turn of events over the last few weeks.

Sorry to hear of your travails “victim”…The reference is to a COFFEE MUG. There are multiple meanings for MANY words…including “TOOL”!

    Victim, please.

I’d like to hope Mr. Boettger wouldn’t give two shites what they called their event. I did find it humorous to note that the article you linked to made no mention of the word “mugging”…

Personally, the stupidity of the pun offends my sensibilities, but please know you’re letting your attackers get another laugh at your expense when their crime has you afraid of mere words. You’ve effectively let the terrorists win.

And I say this as someone who has suffered more than a couple muggings. And who intends to show up at the Sip n Ship Saturday morning, despite their bad but entirely innocent joke.

Hats off to Wyeth — I couldn’t have said it better myself. And though I have not been the victim of a mugging, my big sister was — and she wasn’t a lucky as Mr. Boettger.

    Get over it!
