PhinneyWood reports on arsons at KUOW today

November 9th, 2009 · 17 Comments

I spoke with Ross Reynolds, host of KUOW’s “The Conversation,” this morning about the arsons in Greenwood, including three more overnight. The segment will air today sometime between 12:05 and 12:15 p.m. It will also be available online.

Don’t forget about Tuesday night’s community meeting with Seattle Police and Seattle Fire to discuss their investigation and what people and businesses can do to stay safe. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at Upper Crust Catering, 8420 Greenwood Ave. N. Enter at the 85th Street entrance next to the bus stop and go to the second floor. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

If you have any information about these arsons, call the Arson Tipline at 1-800-55-ARSON.

Are those planning this meeting aware that more people may show up than there’ll be space for at the Upper Crust?

There’s still a day to get the word about about a change. They might want to shift to something that can hold more people and that could handle overflows better.

I agree with Mike Perry. What about using the Phinney Neighborhood Association’s building?

I agree with Mike also, I posted his comments in the main arson thread.

About 18 years ago there was a very active arsonist in north Seattle. The city hired a profiler. She looked at the evidence and quickly came up with an amazingly detailed description of the guy. One of his close relatives saw it in the paper and sorrowfully turned him in.

i heard the cops took someone down at 82nd and greenwood this morning. anyone know about that?

  • 6 Princess Platypus // Nov 9, 2009 at 1:29 pm

John – That was behind a dentist’s office. In other thread, Silver suggested maybe it’s one of the people who have been hitting dental offices recently.

di it occur to ANYONE IN ANY POSITION of planning that having “community meeting” in a business that is inaccessible to disabled folks is a BAD IDEA?
I use a wheelchair and this is my neighborhood, my community. I had lunch at Olive You last week and I cannot attend this so called community meeting. This is beyond thoughtless. It’s wrong. And I am hardly the only person who will be unable to get to this meeting. There’s the senior center, the library, Phinney Neighborhood. WHO MADE the stupid decision to put a meeting up a flight of stairs?

  • 8 SunsetSu // Nov 9, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Yup, putting a community meeting on a second floor with no elevator access is wrong and inconsiderate. I just had knee surgery a week ago. It’s going to be painful to haul myself up those stairs, but at least I HAVE the option of
doing so. Folks in wheelchairs are shut out.

It’s likely more people will show up for the meeting than can fit in the designated meeting place. The meeting should be held at the Greenwood Senior Center, which is large and wheel-chair accessible. It is operated by the Phinney Neighborhood Association.

And it’s the kind of thing the Greenwood Senior Center is good at, anyway. The DO community meetings.
    I don’t get the location chosen. I really don’t.

    Hey Doree,
    1) Congrats / thanks for nicely done KUOW interview today.
    2) (http://www.phinneywood.com/2009/11/09/yet-another-fire-in-central-greenwood/) isn’t working correctly (or maybe got caught in a fix of Daylight Savings time?). 1:25 Post #63 (“Um – he fled to Canada…”) is responding to a posting that now says that it posted @ 2:10, though it actually must have been posted @ 1:20 (to have been responded to @ 1:25). If you change the 2:10 stamp to 1:20 then the list chronology will again make sense.

  • 11 Doree // Nov 9, 2009 at 3:37 pm

R – I just changed the time stamp back an hour, so hopefully that will fix the mix-up. I’ll try to remember to change the time again later.

It looks like one message on that site (http://www.phinneywood.com/2009/11/09/yet-another-fire-in-central-greenwood/) didn’t get bumped. The posting “….Please provide substantiation for these statements.” should be before the posting ”Um – he fled to Canada…”

The latest comment from you on this site (http://www.phinneywood.com/2009/11/09/phinneywood-reports-on-arsons-at-kuow-today-at-12-pm) also appears to not have fallen back an hour, eh?

  • 13 etta // Nov 9, 2009 at 5:53 pm

It’s my understanding that the Fire Dept. made the decision to have the meeting there.

  • 14 RidgeDweller // Nov 9, 2009 at 7:00 pm

Did the SPD and SFD plan the community meeting? Why is the meeting being held in a location that is not accessible by individuals with disabilities? The meeting place should be changed to a location where ALL citizens, including disabled citizens, can attend to hear about the state of our community.

My x husband Jerry Curl was a long time businessman, Throphy and Engraving (deCamp) He was also a member of the small buxiness association. I hope this arson is not by hate groups, targetting small businesses. My thanks to Greenwood for their kindness to Jerry he’s gone to Heaven I suggest to look in what the City of Seattle have in their Comprehensive Plan for Greenwood as mandate by the Growth Management Act. Have the police closed in on the Greenwood Arsonist? For the second day in a row, at 6:45 am, I’ve seen cops lurking around the apartments at 85th/Fremont.

Let’s hope this is over soon.

Had a dentist appointment today, and they told me that the man that the police were talking to in the alley behind the office was a homeless guy that had sort of moved in under the overhang. He had been sleeping there for a couple of days, but seems to have departed the area now. Doesn’t appear to be a person of interest in the arsons or the burglaries.
