Man arrested for trying to break Greenwood Hardware’s window

October 20th, 2009 · 4 Comments

Greenwood Hardware owner Mike Radice called us this morning to say that someone tried to break one of the store’s windows last night.

It happened just before 9 p.m. Fortunately, neighbors heard the ruckus and called police. “Three people from across the street phoned it in,” Radice said.

Police told Radice that a 40-year-old white man broke a beer bottle on the window, then grabbed a garden pot and threw that into the window, too. At about that time, police showed up.

Radice said he’s very grateful that people called the police and that officers arrived so quickly to arrest the man.

Man, do they sell those windows in the store, or was that garden pot extremely light?

He wasn’t a regular neighborhood person that I had seen before—like the guy who wears a plastic bag on his head and kicks tires on parked cars, or the guy with the torn blue suitcoat known as “the general” who yells sporadically, usually at women. Certainly, I have some level of empathy for these folks and their situation up until I feel endangered walking down the main drag in my neighborhood.

This guy was stocky, red jacket, blue jeans, dark baseball cap.

Urban renewal renews neighborhoods, but does not always renew those who teeter on the fragile edge between having mental health or not.

…or completely wasted on drugs that he just scored up the street.
