Farmers Market sign missing

October 12th, 2009 · 5 Comments

The Phinney Center reports that one of the large green and white sandwich board signs used to advertise the Phinney Farmers Market on Fridays has gone missing. It was usually at the intersection of 3rd Avenue NW and NW 65th Street, but it disappeared after the last market on Oct. 2 before it could be picked up for storage until next season.

If you see the sign (it previously wandered into a nearby yard), either bring it to the Phinney Neighborhood Center or call us at 783-2244 and someone will come and get it.

The sign at that location was not well looked after. I often noticed it out advertising the Market well after Friday – sometimes it was left out until Monday.

You’re correct fred117, I’m told such signs cost $65 plus the logo or message. For that reason they must be looked after. I suppose whoever looks after the sign gets to buy a new one.

Unfortunately what most businesses in the neighborhood do not realize is that placing a-frame signs that are not directly in front of your business is illegal. The worst culprits are the new condo projects in Ballard that advertise for miles to direct people to the buildings. I feel bad because the Market is great for the community but what probably happened is someone grabbed the sign because they were tired of seeing illegal advertising in their neighborhood. Here are the city links explaining sign posting and A-Board rules.

SDOT also has a new question and answer BLOG. This link has a question from Frank regarding A-Frame legal issues.

    Bob –
I believe most of these real estate sandwich boards are legal (SMC23.55.012), though I agree they are getting out of hand. The realtors obviously have an effective lobby at City Hall. I don’t know if the Farmers Market signs qualify but I wouldn’t mind an exception for neighborhood events like these.

Fred, Thanks for your info and after reading the code I believe there is conflicting info out there. SDOT said on it’s blog that businesses are allowed one A-Frame each and it must be displayed directly in front of the business.

I agree with you that the farmers market sign and others that have to do with the community should be allowed. I am against businesses placing (free) advertising all over the city – it is an eyesore to me.
