Kelly’s Fresh Produce to replace old Mud Bay

August 28th, 2009 · 10 Comments

The signs in the window and in front of the old Mud Bay building on the corner of 83rd and Greenwood announce that Kelly’s Fresh Produce is coming.

Workers are remodeling inside and out:

Their website says they aim to be an everyday farmer’s market, with a variety of organic and conventional produce, plus a full line of local dairy products that are free from hormones, plus other groceries and even floral.

I’ve got a message in to them to find out more details and when they hope to open, so stay tuned. And thanks to Abby and Tracy for the tips!

Excellent! I hope they thrive and are still around and take over as the local alternative when Greenwood Market’s lease expires.

Sounds awesome. I can’t wait for this place to open. I just hope that the prices are somewhat reasonable.

Hooray–maybe the competition will drive down prices at Ken’s. Good news for the elderly in the ‘hood who walk to do their errands.

Cannot wait! Good news for the neighborhood, good news for the wine store across the street. Now all we need are some crosswalks!

Is this April Fools? Two interesting stores opening on the same block near us – this and the bookstore – all reported the same day! I’m sure we will be frequent customers of both.

This is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

@sezdog: I totally agree that there is a need for a crosswalk between 80th and 85th. During one of our many neighborhood planning projects (I believe it was a traffic-related plan), I advocated for a crosswalk at the post office corner. Unfortunately, it did not garner enough support. Maybe now, with the increase in traffic on Greenwood, it can be revisited.

Maybe they should sell stamps as well as produce because the post office lease is apparantly up in 2011

I live two doors from Kelly’s Produce and actually met with Kelly today. Him and his father bought the building, which needs a lot of work (the old owner was a slumlord hence the problems at mud bay). he told me it could take 3-4 months before they open. they have to pull out the whole floor and replace hoists and joints that support the building that have rotted. we talked about sustainabuility, and adding to the friendly neighborhood. He was a kind man, we shook hands, he was on his knees pulling weeds and we also talked about how they are going to make it harder for kids to get up on the roof, apparently there’s graffiti up there. i live in the alley and know about the graffiti problem. I think it’s going to be a great addition to the hood! just wish it opened sooner.
