House fire at 1st and NW 84th

August 13th, 2009 · 18 Comments

There was a massive response for a house fire at 108 NW 84th St. just after 4:30 p.m. today.

This is a small house set back from NW 84th St. We arrived on the scene just as firefighters entered the house. Heavy smoke and flames were showing. KING 5 is reporting that a man in his 50s was burned and taken to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The fire is now out but firefighters are still checking hot spots. About 50 firefighters were on the scene at one point.

Tonight the Red Cross was called in to help the family of two adults and four children.

Thanks, Bruno for these pictures from the scene.

8:15 p.m. update: (From Dale) After seeing some comments about how curious it is that there have been three fires in the space of a couple days, we checked in with Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen.

While investigators are still determining the cause of this fire, she says there’s no indication this and the other two fires earlier this week are connected, noting that the fire at 6th and 85th was determined to be caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

3 p.m., 8/14: Investigators now say it’s arson.

My husband walked there and he says there are flames coming back out of the roof.

I heard the sirens and knew I could get the scoop here.
    Thanks Doree!

Ditto. I smelled smoke and heard the sirens on the way home from work, turned on the TV (nothing there) and checked with our neighborhood news source, Phinneywood.com. Voila! (sp?) You’re on it (as are all the reporters-in-the-trenches). So — tell us how we can subscribe! Thanks!

Another fire recently in North Seattle - suspected arson: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/53163047.html. I hope this isn’t a trend.

The house is just behind the old Pizza Hut building. We walked by on 1st ave sometime before 4:30. Someone was cleaning up the old PH, doing some pressure washing along the back fence and workers were in the building. We continued on to do some banking, and then came out and watched the multiple fire trucks go by. We stood at GW and 85th, and smoke was bellowing. Watching from 1st and 85th, flames eventually shot 15 ft above the roof. The place is toast. Although multiple engines and several Medic units were on hand, it took forever for the first SPD car to arrive to direct traffic.

I was working next door when this fire started… burning garbage cans the culprit! It seems someone is living out they’re dream of being a fire bug in Greenwood.

Hmmm, three fires in a small area in the space of a few days.

Womble, I was pondering the same thing… little suspicious.

Greenwood used to have a Pizza Hut???

These fires may or may not be connected, but if the fire started in the garbage cans (as I heard from the next door neighbor), then it’s an indication that we should be on alert and make sure there are not flammable things near our houses that an arsonist could use.

Sal and his wife are our neighbors. We live at 104 NW 84th and are collecting donations in the form of cash, clothing, food, etc. We are trying to set up a fund at the Chase bank on Greenwood and 85th. They have lost everything and anything you can give would help. We are around most of the weekend and would love it if you stop by. We’ve already had many of our friends and neighbors leave donations for this family. Thank you!

How old and what gender are the children?

  • 18 Joy // Aug 15, 2009 at 4:02 pm

That was my friend who was burned in the fire. He is still at Harborview in Intensive Care. Someone should take up a donation for his medical costs. They had to sedate him to change the bandages. That is painful.
