Solar-powered cash at Phinney Center

July 16th, 2009 · 6 Comments

The Phinney Center is installing a solar-powered ATM in its upper parking lot. It should be up and running for Friday’s Farmer’s market. It will be in a secure “cage” that will be locked at night. Here it is still under construction.

PNA is giving the space for it and it is owned and maintained by a private company (not a bank). They will charge $2.50 transaction fee, which goes straight to them - the PNA isn’t making any money on the deal. We’re providing it as a service to Market shoppers and anyone in the neighborhood who needs easy access to some cash and who doesn’t mind paying a fee for the convenience. We imagine folks at Red Mill who don’t carry a checkbook may be happy it’s there when they realize they don’t take plastic.

How long before it’s destroyed by the neighborhood vandals?

Video surveillance might be a good idea to deter those dad-gummed vandals!

Or better yet maybe the community should take turns sleeping by the ATM to make sure the “vandals” don’t strike?

I think the cash machine is a great idea!

Oh sweet, a place close to Redmill to get some emergency burger money!

I’ve never seen an ATM without a video camera, so I’m sure there will be one here.
    Great idea, in any case.

Maybe a week before it’s hauled away.
