Brainstorm ideas for Greenwood Park

July 15th, 2009 · 12 Comments

Volunteer group Vision Greenwood Park invites the community to brainstorm ideas for new uses and activities at Greenwood Park.

Thursday’s meeting is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 9501 Greenwood Ave. N. The meeting will be facilitated by Site Workshop, a Seattle-based landscape architecture firm.

Greenwood Park is located between Fremont and Evanston Avenues and North 87th and 89th Streets. There are four lots on the Fremont Avenue side of Greenwood Park that may become part of the park in the future. Two of them are owned by Seattle Parks and Recreation and two are privately owned (and not currently for sale). A group of neighbors, called Vision Greenwood Park, have come together to lead a community planning process to create a vision for the future of these lots. This vision will follow these guiding principles:

  • Plan comprehensively for the long-term use of all four lots.
  • Engage the community in a process to explore a variety of potential uses.
  • Integrate the new lots with the rest of the park.
  • Build on the child and young family features of the park and create uses for other groups including, but not limited to, teens and senior citizens.
  • This is the first of three community meetings that will guide development of a plan for the future of the Fremont Avenue lots that incorporates the needs and vision of the neighborhood.

This project is funded by a Neighborhood Matching Fund grant from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. For more information go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VisionGreenwoodPark/

Step 1 - get those folks in the “privately owned parcels” to sell!

I cannot attend this meeting, but I would like to suggest inclusion of elephant rides and/or an elephant dunk tank in this park. Thank you.

Off leash dog area - woot! (I mean woof!)

    elephant rides…..
why the last time I rode an elephant was way back in the summer of ‘76 in Jackson County Missouri. THIS is an idea that I can endorse.

Don’t know how you are going to get elephants to sit at the end of a plank for a dunk tank. So I say no thanks and the splash would be real big.

    Neighbor and Strange Dancer,
Better get the elephant ride/dunk tank supporters to the meeting tonite (6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army, 9501 Greenwood Ave. N. ) or there is no hope of seeing this in the Park. If you don’t participate in the process, you have no right to complain when your wishes go unfulfilled…

Etta: Who says I am complaining? It’s is unclear how you have been driven to that unfortunate conclusion. I cannot attending the meeting and I am simply passing along my suggestions, which I believe you have acknowledged (thank you!). If I were you, I would brush up on my reading comprehension.

I would also like to see a BBQ hut at the new park or perhaps some rotating local vendors on hand who are good with ribs, brisket, steaks, etc.

Who said I said you are complaining? Just a friendly reminder that we want to encourage participation and hear from everyone during the planning period.

Will the plans be communicated to those who live close to the park before a final decision is made?

I would hate to have a dog park, elephant dunk tank, or a BBQ hut across the street from me if I lived there…

Something like a pea patch is easy on the eyes, peaceful, and doesn’t smell.

PapaD, the best way to stay informed (and help ensure that the park includes what you’d like to see in it) is to come to a meeting and voice your opinion. The steering committee and landscape architects will make every effort to keep the community informed on the ideas that seem to be gaining traction.
The August 30 meeting will be at Greenwood Park, so I hope that those of you who live close by will stroll over and weigh in on the options as they stand at that point in time.

I like the pea patch idea, perhaps around the existing cherry trees in the southernmost Seattle Parks parcel. How about a kids wading pool similar in size to the one in Sandel park.
