Vote for Phinney Farmers Market logo

April 21st, 2009 by Doree

Four finalists have been chosen for this year’s Phinney Farmers Market logo, to be used on T-shirts and shopping bags. Vote online for your favorite by May 1.

Phinney’s Farmers Market runs 3-7 p.m. May 29 through October in the lower parking lot of the Phinney Center.

The PNA has partnered with the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance , a community-based non-profit which brings Washington State farmers into the city to sell their farm-fresh produce.

At the Phinney Farmers Market, farmers from both sides of the Cascades offer their own fresh-picked fruit, herbs and all kinds of fresh, seasonal vegetables. The market is rounded out with local honey, jams, farmstead cheeses, fresh pasta, sweet and hard cider, baked goods and ready-to eat offerings.

The Phinney Farmers Market is the place to be on a Friday evening, whether you are simply shopping or staying for dinner. Choices include wood-fired pizza, Vietnamese spring rolls, and dishes from Pan Africa, a PNA tenant. There’s even entertainment from 4 – 6 p.m. each week!

Please consider walking, biking or busing if you can.

To celebrate the Woodland Park Zoo’s new Humboldt Penguin exhibit (which opens May 2), the Zoo is teaming up with The Greenwood Collective for the Penguins on the March art project.

Artists will decorate 22-inch fabricated penguins, which will then “migrate” through Seattle neighborhoods before arriving at The Greenwood Collective during the July 10th monthly art walk for a silent auction to benefit the zoo’s field conservation projects.

The Call for Artists lasts through April 30. Artists of all ages and experience levels are invited. Artists can submit online. Fishing Kids at Green Lake Saturday

April 18th, 2009 by Doree

Tricia sent us some great photos from the fifth annual Fishing Kids event by the Bathhouse Theatre at Green Lake today. Here are her kids Matthew (left), John and Annie (in white shirt with face hidden), getting a little instruction:

The program is put on by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, CAST for Kids, and Seattle Parks and Recreation. For $5, kids got a rod and reel, T-shirt, bait and could catch up to two fish. Fish & Wildlife rangers and Seattle firefighters talked to the kids about water safety, and volunteers showed kids how to bait their hook and use their rod and reel. Here’s Tricia’s son, Jojo, showing off his catch:

Catching the fish was actually quite easy — to get the kids excited (and mine were!) — at the swimming area behind the Bathhouse Theater they set up nets and stocked it with 4,000 trout! My kids came away with 2 each – so we definitely have a tasty dinner planned for tonight! Many helpful hands were on board (in orange vests) to help the kids catch fish and bop ‘em on the head once they were out of the water. They even had a cleaning station set up to gut the fish so we could bring them home to eat.

Of Buffy and Molly Moon

April 17th, 2009 by Dale

Neptune Coffee in Greenwood has “Buffyverse” trivia about the show, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” tonight from 8-10 p.m. It’s part of their regular round of trivia nights and other events.

While you’re there, weigh in on which Molly Moon ice cream flavor you’d like for them to add to their freezer. We haven’t had the pleasure of trying the Wallingford creation, but we’ve discovered people are quite passionate about the ice cream maker known for making unusual flavors including basalmic strawberry, cardamom and Thai iced tea.
