Put in your 2 cents on townhouse design review

April 29th, 2009 · 3 Comments

If you want a little input into all the new townhouses that are being built in Phinney/Greenwood and around the city, you can attend a Department of Planning and Development (DPD) public meeting on the Administrative Design Review (ADR) process next Monday.

The meeting is at Seattle City Hall, 600 4th Ave., in the Bertha Knight Landes Room. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 6 p.m.

Mayor Nickels asked DPD to create an Administrative Design Review process for townhouse development, in conjunction with the Multifamily Code Update. Currently, most townhouses are not required to undergo design review. The intent of the project is to increase design quality and flexibility, without adding significantly to project cost, time and housing affordability.

This is the second public meeting on the topic. Draft recommendations will be presented, which are based on further research and analysis, and on the comments received from the public. After a short presentation, there will be plenty of opportunity for comments, questions and discussion. We hope you will be able to join us. After the meeting, all the information will be available on the website.

The town house garages are too small.

Yea, townhouse garages are useless. You can’t get a Saturn in one let alone a SUV.
You wonder where street parking went? Where those town houses stand now once stood a single family residence. Now, instead of one car per household that once parked off street, you have four houses with 1.5 cars per household that use their garges as storage spaces and now park their 1.5 cars along Phinney or 61st. Phinney, is becoming like Broadway on Capitol Hill.
Ya know. there was a time when the zoo planned to build a state of the art parcking facility for all to use, not only zoo members. The plan was a safe , secure, and USEFUL facility. 25 members of the PRCC won an appeal with the City Examiner and the Master Use Permit was recinded. They city was to pay for half the facility and the zoo would pay for half…. more or less. Our zoo spend thousands to please neighbors and it was denied by a handfull of PRCC types. The zoo will not do that again. There will be no parking relief. Bottom line is…. and you will not get any of them on record saying so but many want the zoo gone. That’s how they plan to deal with parking congestion…. turn it into a picnic park used by hundreds of ??? types instead of thousands of families and neighbors.
