Thieves steal money, computer equipment from Greenwood Senior Center

February 6th, 2009 · 10 Comments

Thieves broke into the Greenwood Senior Center at 525 N. 85th St. sometime after 10 p.m. Thursday night, stealing money, checks and some computer equipment.

GSC Director Cecily Kaplan says the thieves broke in through a window by actually removing the panes of glass. They rifled through her office, then broke into the office manager’s office and dragged the large safe into the hallway and pried it open, taking about $3,000 in cash and checks.

They also stole a three-year-old Compaq laptop computer and two BenQ video projectors, one of which was brand new.

Kaplan says she normally goes to the bank frequently and there’s hardly ever a large amount of cash on site, but last night the safe contained proceeds from the monthy spaghetti feed and karaoke bingo.

“Ultimately I’m really hopeful the insurance will kick in and get us back what we really need, especially the money, because we really do depend on that money to keep our programs going,” Kaplan says. “I want people to know that if they happened to come to something in the last 10 days and wrote a check to the senior center, they should stop payment on it.”

Seems like there’s been a number of robberies around 85th Street lately. Very disturbing!

The further north of 85th you go, the more “activity” occurs. The old city boundary was there, and the neighborhood shifts character suddenly when the sidewalks disappear.

    …and the tweakers appear!

I live above 85th and yes the area has issues Whopper but the constant meth comments you leave on this blog are getting tiresome.

Agree, Paul M. What’s the problem with Whopper? Always a meth comment. Does Whopper ever provide constructive commentary?

I am concerned about the increase in robbery and burglary. We never hear of anyone getting caught, shot or arrested.

Why be concerned about robbery when you have Whopper to kick around!

Must be side effect of tweaking.

I haven’t been on this site long enough to have a clue why Whopper is obsessed with Greenwood and a methamphetamine connection.
Did Greenwood Meth-Heads pee in his Wheaties?
Was he psychologically scarred in his youth by a meth-head aunt or uncle from Greenwood?
I feel for you, Whopper. Greenwood Meth is a helluva drug, brutha.

jm, I agree with the lack of production from authorities. They’re always there to catch you goin’ 50 on Aurora, but curiously absent from any major criminal activity. Most won’t even follow up when their is evidence sitting in their laps. Their radar detectors and red light cameras are permissible in court, but our hidden cameras and security cams never quite seem to matter. My roommate’s car got broken into and it’s on cam with the license and eveything and they could really care less.

These guys are just everyday doughnut eatin’ joes like us. Except with a shining badge and a gun. They are tax-collectors. They could care less about your stolen personal belongings or your safety.

The answer? Excercise your 2nd Ammendment Rights. Defend yourself and your property cuz’ God knows they ain’t gonna be there for ya unless you took a lane change without a blinker.

This is very sad. The ironic timing - immediately following two major fundraisers - makes me wonder if someone’s teenage grandkid with wandering eyes and a wayward spirit was among the guests at one of the events.

Every business in the area should have burglar alarms and other security systems to help prevent this stuff. It’s only going to get worse this year.
