Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development has approved Ken’s Market expansion with no changes, following a Jan. 9 appeal hearing.
Several nearby residents had appealed the decision not to require Ken’s Market to provide significant additional parking spaces or traffic calming measures. The city had determined that additional traffic would be minimal.
Ken’s is expanding the grocery store into the entire building at the corner of Greenwood Ave. N. and NW 73rd St., including the spots formerly occupied by the Greenwood Bakery, Allusia gift store, and Couth Buzzard book store. Ken’s is also adding a small amount to the back and a partial second story for offices. Click here for previous reports and a design drawing.
Thanks to Trapper for the tip.

I think this is going to be a great addition to the neighborhood. Just think – we could have been cursed with a Burger King instead.

And, FWIW, we live just a couple of blocks away.

I just wish they were going to have their own bakery inside.
Apologies for the chopped up comments. The Ritalin hasn’t kicked in yet.

Wait, I didn’t get a chance to complain! Can we appeal again? I’m concerned about the project’s impact on bikes and local fauna.

I’m not happy at all, since I live right behind Ken’s. Employees’ cars (including the manager’s) completely fill up our street from 6 am to 11pm, and they seem to have permanently stored the big blue van of theirs on 72nd. Add customers’ cars to the mix and it’s going to be a huge traffic mess.

And a ps, that if I lived a FEW blocks away, I might feel differently about it, too.

Talking about walkability. We are blessed to have multiple grocery stores within walking distance.

I have a lot of good will towards Ken’s Market and the staff. They never complained when PNPJ tabled near the entrance for Peace education. Once I left $400 sitting on the counter and the cashier saved it for me (no identifying name on the envelope.) Now that is honesty!
I live a only few short blocks away so the increased parking may be an issue. I love being able to walk there to do shopping (usually go to PCC) on the fly. I miss the bookstore and bakery though. Wish Ken’s did not have to expand but they are a good business in my opinion.

“Peace education”
I better complain to Kens then. I hate hippies, the stink up the whole street with petruli and ALWAYS vote to raise our property taxes.

We LOVE Ken’s and are so excited for the expansion. We love spending our money on the local businesses, and appreciate the fresh produce and selection Ken’s has. We can’t wait to see what they add in their expansion, and think it is going to be great for the neighborhood. We live ONE block away, and are not concerned about the traffic – city life has traffic. You can’t expect to live off a busy street like Greenwood Ave. and hope for seclusion.
A side note to “Whopper” – hippies stink up the street with “petruli?” What is that – a combination of petrol and patchouli?
