Seattle says sand to be swept up by Jan. 21

January 13th, 2009 · 2 Comments

City officials say they’ll have the 12,000 tons of sand spread on area roads during the recent snow storms cleaned up by Jan. 21. Greenwood Avenue is one place that’s got plenty to pick up from the bike and center lanes. Here’s a picture taken this morning at 71st and Greenwood Avenue.

Ten street sweepers are mainly out from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. If anyone gets photographic evidence of a sweeper in the neighborhood, send it to us and we’ll post it.

    That’s a relief.

It’s tough for us bicycle commuters who either have to choose to ride in the road and risk getting hit (or raising the ire of motorists who don’t understand why we’re not in the bike lane) or ride in the sand and risk slipping.

j - it is tough. I took a pretty nasty spill a few years back turning off a downhill street and hitting a patch of sand left over form the storms. I see people barreling down the Fremont Ave hill in the sand-covered bike lane. Hope they don’t have to put on the brakes…..
