We’ve seen a flurry of recent crime reports in the Greenwood area, including confirmed stuff like a QFC store employee being hit by a shoplifter’s truck, to graffiti on the bathroom at Greenwood Park, 602 N 87th St.:

And we’ve seen unconfirmed stuff like a mugging at 101st and Greenwood on Monday night, along with the burglary of a nearby barber shop and an attempted car break-in on 84th a week ago (courtesy the Greenwood Discussion Group). How are things in your immediate neighborhood?

Funny you should ask. I was just out walking my dog 10 minutes ago and saw a woman and her daughters standing next to their car with a broken window at 78th NW & 1st. She had just parked to pick up her girls from the Catholic school and in that short time her car was broken into and her purse that was on the floor was stolen. This is an area with quite a bit of foot and car traffic this time of the day.

This is basic stuff, you don’t leave valuables in your car.
I think there’s just more reporting on crime and slightly more awareness. Also, there are more people living in the neighborhood now.
The taggers are kids, teenagers. Of that, there’s no doubt.
The smash and grabs are crimes of opportunity, which can be prevented by taking precautions.
The rest of it is what we need to be worried about, and look out for each other and our neighbors by calling 911 when there’s suspicious activity.

Last week I saw three teens, around 11:15 PM, looking into parked cars on 1st NW and trying the doors. They were moving pretty fast on foot. Two girls and a boy about 16 years old.

We heard about a dramatic burglary on N.68th about a month ago. The homeowner encountered three guys in his house, chased them out, fought with one and managed to call the SPD with his cell phone. He got the license plate of the getaway car and the SPD arrested one of the burglars within a short time.

Unfortunately, jm, they were unable to press any charges against the one that was arrested for that incident.

Why no charges?

The victim and the eyewitness were unable to positively identify the suspect 100%.

A lot of the tagging lately includes the signs MS-13, which stands for Mara Salvatrucha, a notoriously violent gang that began in the prisons of El Salvador and has worked its way into most urban areas in the U.S. The high school girl whose body was found murdered in the lake north of town a week or so ago was a member of the gang and from the Aurora Ave. area. Don’t know if the tagging is just kids trying to be cool or real evidence of the gang’s presence here.

Things will only get worse in 2009 as the Bush recession hits more people.

Hey jm – don’t be a tool and turn this board into a forum for politics. There are only about ten thousand political discussion forums on the internet.

Along Greenwood Ave and Phinney Ave we are still seeing the windows scratched or etched by some of the graffiti kids. Almost every other store front has some kind of gibberish scratched into the glass.

Actually, studies have shown that as recessions hit, people move in with their folks and retrench, crime actually goes _down_.
It’s not as intuitive as you’d think.
I’m not totally convinced that its crime that’s up, or it’s our ability to track it better through these types of forums, that’s making us more aware.

I forgot one thing… sorry…
If you see people graffiti-ing or doing other suspicious behavior , it’s best to report it. I know it’s creep and odd to call 911 (or at least it feels that way to me). But I’ve been told repeatedly by neighborhood watch folks that they need to catch them red-handed.

Generally, I am not walking along Greenwood at 2AM to see them, but we have contacted the police numerous times and have no problem calling them. During the porch thief era, the block watchers were calling 911 frequently.

We haven’t seen any MS13 tags, just RALF, JEANS, CZECH MAFIA, CLASP and STC. These must be the current crop.
