After struggling with financial troubles for some time, the four-year-old Phinney Market at 5918 Phinney Ave. N. will close its doors this Friday.
Owners Wallace and Lauretta Wright invite everyone to a farewell barbecue from 4-7 p.m. on Friday. Their farewell letter states they’ll serve meals to anyone, with only a donation requested.
After Friday, Phinney Market gift cards will be honored at the Wrights’ other store, Meridian Market, at 2201 N. 56th, on the east side of Green Lake.
The Wrights had recently presented a plan to save the market by offering “shares” to investors.

Although this is not unexpected, it’s sad to see a local business go. It’s looking more and more like Phinney Ave. will be Cruddy Mixed-Use Monstrosity ave.

That’s strange. I was in there the other day and asked if they were closing (because the shelves were nearly empty) and the young woman I spoke to said that they had almost gotten to that point, but that the neighbors had gotten together and paid their back rent. She said they’d be re-stocked by this Friday. There were 4 other women behind the counter with her and no one offered a correction or a variation on this story.

Every time I went in there, I got a really weird, vaguely hostile vibe–like I wasn’t part of their club. They seemed like an amateur version of Ken’s.

I’m with David… I got the same vibe at the Phinney location. Totally different and welcoming at Meridian Market.

Does anyone know what’s going into that space?
I have always liked the layout and vibe of the Meridian Market. Phinney felt less organized and a little schlocky, imho.
